A solid defensive effort from The College at Brockport Men's Basketball team carried the Golden Eagles to a 91-62 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) had a successful day from beyond the arc as the junior connected on six three-point shots, leading Brockport with 18 points.
Brockport forced a season-high 26 turnovers against the Saints, including 15 in the final 20 minutes. The Golden Eagles used a full-court pressure to prevent St. Lawrence from getting in any sort of rhythm. Brockport held the Saints to just five field goals in the first half and 32.6 percent from the floor overall. St. Lawrence connected on just four three-point shots on 20 attempts on the day.
Bell, a three-point threat at all times had connected on just three shots from beyond the arc in his last four games. The first-year member of the Golden Eagles found his touch against the Saints and lit up the scoreboard. Bell provided a spark after collecting a steal and pulling up for a three on the opposite end to give Brockport a 53-29 lead with just over 16 to play. Bell's 18 points are a career-best as a Golden Eagle.
The 91 points for the Golden Eagles is a team-best this year.
Brockport grabbed the opening lead to start the game as Bell connected on a three-point shot. The two teams traded leads midway over the next several minutes as St. Lawrence maintained a 14-13 lead at the 11:04 mark.
Derek Klein (Valley Stream, NY/Long Island Lutheran) converted a layup to spark a 14-0 run for the Golden Eagles.
Mike Gallagher (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) scored six points during the run. Brockport allowed just 11 points the rest of the half and went into intermission with a comfortable 41-25 lead.
The second half proved to be much of the same for Brockport as the Golden Eagles opened up with a 14-4 run to take their biggest lead of the day at 26. Bell ignited Brockport in the second half after making his first three three-point attempts, all coming in a span of 3:53. As a team, Brockport connected on nine three-point shots, the sixth time the team has reached that mark.
John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) scored 16 points against the Saints, extending his streak of games in double-figures to 14 dating back to last season. Klein scored just five points but the point guard led Brockport with six rebounds and dished out a team-high six assists. Gallagher finished the game with 10 points while
Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) scored 10 points in his first game as a Golden Eagle.
With the win, Brockport improves to 6-4 and have now won four games in a row. The Golden Eagles return to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a home game against Geneseo at 8:00 pm on Jan. 8.
