The College at Brockport field hockey team played strong for 55 minutes against #14 The University of Rochester, but in the final 15 minutes of the game the Yellow Jackets went on a scoring frenzy and ended up defeating the Golden Eagles 4-0 on Tuesday nights under the lights.
In the first half, Brockport gained possession right away, earning two corners. Madison Buckley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Molly Hurd (Richford, NY/Whitney Point) each fired off shots, but they were saved. Most of the half was filled with back-and-forth play. Both teams had great scoring opportunities, but could finish. At the 12 minute mark, the Yellow Jackets fired a shot that rocketed off the post and back into the middle of the circle. The Golden Eagles had some strong shots as well, but couldn't come up with the finish they needed.
The majority of the second half was the same as the first. Both teams trading opportunities to score, but still being unable to find the back of the cage.
At 56:46 the Yellow Jackets got on the board. Megan Keil tipped the ball in past Lindsay Farrell (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) off of a shot rocketed into the circle by Michelle Relin.
Less than two minutes later, almost the same exact play happened and the Yellow Jackets pushed their lead to two.
Rochester added a third goal one minute later. Gina Cunningham slipped the ball past Farrrell while there was a scramble in front of the cage.
The fourth and final goal of the game came at 63:20 after Callie Fisher collected a rebound and redirected it into the back of the cage.
The Golden Eagles continued to fight as time ran out, earning two penalty corners. Jackie Massoni (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore), Gina Stephan (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Buckley all got off shots, but could not find the finish they needed.
The Yellow Jackets held a 21-14 advantage in total shots, but the Golden Eagles recorded an 11-9 advantage in corners.
Farrell finished the game with nine saves. Buckley led the offense with five shots, two on goal.
Brockport returns to action on Saturday for a SUNYAC matchup against Oswego at 11:00 am.
