Senior Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) scored 19 points to help The College at Brockport men's basketball team seal an 87-68 non-conference victory at St. Lawrence in the opening game of the 2013-14 season.
The Golden Eagles forced 27 turnovers throughout the game and outscored the Saints 48-22 in the paint.
The two teams battled back-and-forth through the first 13:00 minutes of the opening half. St. Lawrence opened up the scoring with two made free throws at 19:34. The Saints held onto the lead until 17:22 when Brockport's senior John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) converted on a three-point play to tie the game up 4-4.
Caruthers gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game with a layup at 17:03.
The Saints quickly answered back with a layup of their own to tie things back up.
Another layup from Caruthers at 11:36 put Brockport up 19-13.
With 8:39 remaining in the half, St. Lawrence drained a three-pointer to tie the game up at 23.
A layup from Lance Legister (Staten Island, NY/Millbrook School) 23 seconds later started Brockport on 24-12 scoring run. The Golden Eagles closed the half with a 47-35 lead.
In the second half, the Saints were the first to get on the board again with two made free throws.
A three-point play from St. Lawrence's Kyle Edwards cut the Saints deficit to single digits at 18:58, but it is the closest that St. Lawrence would get to the Golden Eagles throughout the rest of the game.
At 9:19, freshman Aaron White (North Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) hit a jumper to give the Golden Eagles a commanding 26 point lead, their largest of the day.
The closest St. Lawrence was able to get during the remainder of the game was 19.
Both teams were held scoreless in the final 2:36 of play.
Caruthers led the Golden Eagles on offense with 19 points and four steals. He was 8-for-11 from the floor. Ivy finished the game with 16 points, six steals and six rebounds. He hit 10-of-13 from the line. Patrick Coyle (North Chili, NY/Bishop Kearny) tallied 14 points and four blocks, while Bobby Bell (Rochester, NY/East) chipped in eight points.
Brockport finished the night shooting 43.1% from the floor and 71.0% from the free throw line.
Brady Condlin led the way for the Saints with 22 points. Kieran Miller finished the game with 13 rebounds and seven points while Janpeter Brase scored 11 points and Kyle Kobis added 10.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday on the road for a 7:00 pm non-conference matchup at Purchase College.
