The College at Brockport Baseball team exploded for 23 runs in a doubleheader sweep at St. Joseph's College on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Eagles won by scores of 13-2 and 11-3 to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) collected four hits on the day while
Travis Renwick (Middletown, NY/Chapel Field Christian) and
James Bardenett (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) both improved to 2-0 on the mound.
With his win in game two, Bardenett picked up his 18
th career victory to move into a three-way to tie for first place with Jason Shannon and Ben Kimball. Bardenett worked five innings allowing zero earned runs while striking out eight batters. Bardenett's eight strikeouts moves him into fourth place on the career list with 137, passing current assistant coach Kyle Smith. The senior righty has not lost a game in his last nine starts, posting a 0.98 earned run average over that span.
Brockport's offense got started in the top of the second inning in game one as
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) reached base on an infield single to score
Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) and put Brockport up 1-0. The Golden Eagles scored two runs in each of the next two innings.
Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) put Brockport up 4-0 in the fourth with a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Wilson and Gianni.
Brockport's big inning came in the top of the six as the Golden Eagles put up a seven spot on their opponents. The first seven batters reached base for Brockport.
Nick Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Wilson each recorded RBI singles in the inning as Brockport built a 12-0 lead.
Renwick cruised through the first four innings, allowing just one base runner. St. Joe's did not record their first hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. The senior southpaw worked six innings, striking out eight batters and giving up five hits while not allowing a run. Renwick did a solid job keeping the ball on the ground as the senior allowed just one fly ball out against 22 batters.
Matthew Coleman (Ballston Spa, NY/Saratoga Springs) pitched a perfect seventh while
Ben Fuess (Fairport, NY/Fairport) made his first career appearance, working the final two innings.
The Golden Eagles offense wasted little time getting on the board in game two, scoring seven runs in the top of the second. Wilson singled to center to score Hurlimann while
Jamie Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) hit a sacrifice fly to score Gianni. Hurlimann came to bat once again in the inning and provided a two out three-run triple to score Bunce,
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and
Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage). Hurlimann finished the game 2-3 with two runs. The Golden Eagles stole four bases in the inning.
From there Bardenett carried Brockport on the mound. The senior struck out at least one batter in all five innings he pitched, including two in the first, second and fourth. In two starts this year, Bardenett has struck out 16 batters while allowing just three walks.
Wilson has now hit safely in nine straight games, dating back to last season. The junior is batting .571 (8-14) on the year with five runs scored and five RBI.
The 23 runs scored are the most in a two-game span for the Golden Eagles since the 2011 team scored 23 runs in back-to-back wins over Rowan and Rutgers-Camden. The Golden Eagles capitalized on 13 St. Joe's errors on the day while committing just one error of their own.
This is the second straight season Brockport has started off 4-0.
Brockport will take its unblemished record against RIT on Tuesday at Monroe Community College before heading on its annual spring training trip in Central Florida on Thursday.
