John Countryman Scores Overtime Winner

Brockport comes from behind for conference road victory

Alex Austin set up the game-winning goal in overtime against Potsdam
Box Score

Freshman John Countryman (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) scored his second goal of the game 1:51 into overtime to lead The College at Brockport Men's Lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory Saturday afternoon over Potsdam in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game in Potsdam.

Brockport (3-6 Overall, 1-1 SUNYAC) scored the final four goals of regulation to tie the game and force the overtime period. A cross-checking penalty gave the Golden Eagles the man advantage early in the overtime session. Brockport moved the ball around the perimeter of the defense early in the 1:00 man-up opportunity but as time was running down in the penalty, Jesse Elliott (Clifton Park, NY/ Shenendehowa) fired a shot off the pipe but a loose ball push call gave possession back to Brockport and Alex Austin (Rochester, NY/Trinity-Pawling) found Countryman at the top of the crease and fed the freshman a perfect pass before Countryman scored the winning goal as the penalty time expired.

The teams traded goals for the first two quarters and Potsdam (4-3, 0-1) held a 5-4 advantage at the halftime intermission. Steve Brissette (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus), Riley Austin (Rochester, NY/Eastridge), Tim Cook (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Elliott each scored in the first half for Brockport.

In the third quarter, Potsdam scored twice in the first half of the quarter to take a 7-4 lead before Brissette cut the lead to 7-5 with his second goal of the day for Brockport.

The Bears added a late goal in the third and then opened the fourth quarter with a man-up goal for the 9-4 lead with 13:02 left to play in regulation.

Countryman started the comeback with a man-up goal at the 11:45 mark and Riley Austin made it a two-goal game with his second of the game just less than five minutes later. With less than four minutes remaining, Justin Cook (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) cut the lead to 9-8 with a goal off a pass from Alex Austin before Elliott tied the game with his second goal of the contest and just 1:17 left in the fourth quarter.

Riley Austin, Elliott, Countryman and Brissette scored two goals each for Brockport. Cory Banwaree (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) made six saves to earn the victory in the Golden Eagles goal.
