Empire 8 Game

Wright Stadium - Oneonta, NY

This Week: The College at Brockport Football team stays on the road for the second consecutive week with a trip to Wright Stadium and Oneonta, NY for an Empire 8 game against Hartwick College at 2 pm Saturday. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since a 2008 ECAC Bowl game that ended in a Brockport 70-68 victory.

Records and Common Opponents: Brockport enters the game with a 4-2 overall record and a 2-2 Empire 8 mark after defeating Alfred University 45-42 last weekend while Hartwick comes in with a 2-4 record and a 1-3 mark in conference play. The Hawks have dropped four of its last five games with the lone win coming against Alfred (34-30 on Oct. 4). In Empire 8 play, both teams have a loss to St. John Fisher on their record but have faced different opponents in the other three games.

Series History: The Golden Eagles and Hawks have met five times since the first meeting in 1947. The teams met every year from 1947-50 with Hartwick winning the first two games, a 0-0 tie in 1949 and a 6-0 Brockport win in 1950. The next game in the series didn't come for 58 years when the two met on a very cold late November day in the ECAC Northwest Bowl Championship game in Hartwick.

Record-Breaking Day: The 70-68 final score in regulation is still the NCAA Division III record holder for the highest combined score for two teams in a regulation game. It also holds the record for the highest scoring game for a team in a loss in regulation. The game featured several outstanding individual performances but the rushing performance by Brockport's Garet Lynch is still in the NCAA record books with the most rushing yards in one half as Lynch had 370 yards on 26 carries in the first half.

Coaches: Head Coach Jason Mangone starts his second season at the helm after establishing the best first-year coaching season record in Brockport history with the 8-3 record and is currently 12-5 as the head coach. Mark Carr is in his 13th season as the head coach. He is 56-68 at Hartwick. He was the 1989 MVP for New Hampshire as a quarterback leading the Wildcats to a seven-game win streak in the middle of the season.

Next up for Brockport: The Golden Eagles returns home for a 1 pm matchup against Ithaca College Nov. 1.

Record-Breaking Receiver: Senior Andrew Mrozek is on the verge of breaking at least one more school record this week. The wide receiver already has the record for most career TD catches (22 and counting) and is now just 97 yards away from former teammate Jake Spalik's record for career reception yardage. Mrozek has 2,488 yards in his career and Spalik's record set in 2013 is 2,585 yards. He is also No. 2 all-time for career receptions with 134 but needs 86 more to catch Spalik's career total of 220 catches.

More Receiver Records: Junior receiver Eric Malave eclipsed the 100-career reception milestone earlier this year and currently has 113 catches in two and a half seasons. The 113 receptions is currently #5 on the all-time list at Brockport with Dan Fichter's 125 catches next on the list.

Rushing Toward the Record Book: Sophomore running back Dan Andrews has already made a name for himself at Brockport, setting the freshman record with 1,236 yards last season. He is just 114 yards away from the 2,000-yard milestone and is 234 yards from the #5 spot in the Brockport record book for career rushing yardage.

Around the Empire 8: There are three other games this weekend involving Empire 8 teams as Salisbury (4-2, 3-1) plays at Ithaca (4-2, 3-2) at Noon, Frostburg (3-4, 1-4) heads to Alfred University (3-3, 1-3) for a 12 pm game and Utica (4-3, 2-3) takes on Buffalo State (5-1, 3-1) at 2 pm in Buffalo. St. John Fisher (5-1, 4-1) plays at Alfred State (2-4) in a non-conference tilt.
