Senior Matt Lee (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) and freshman Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) led The College at Brockport men's basketball on offense as the team defeated Geneseo 73-68 in a nail-biting State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup on Saturday night in Brockport, pushing the Golden Eagles winning streak to 15 and tying the second longest winning streak in school history.
Brockport (16-1,10-0 SUNYAC) battled with Geneseo (14-3, 8-2 SUNYAC) from the very beginning of the game. The Golden Eagles struggled from the field and fell behind by as many as nine points, but finished out the first half on an 11-2 run to tie things up heading into halftime. Eight of the 11 points were scored by Lyerly who closed out the run with a huge dunk.
Both teams kept things close in the beginning of the second half. The Golden Eagles fell behind by 11 after the Knights put together an 11-0 run that started at 13:25. However, Brockport answered back with a run of its own. Lee scored eight points on the run; including two huge three's to give Brockport the lead 46-45 with 5:45 left in regulation.
A layup from John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) with 38 seconds remaining put Brockport up by two points, but Geneseo was able to score a layup with 18 seconds left to take the game into overtime.
Brockport finished out a close overtime hitting 12-out-of-14 free throws. Ivy was clutch from the line for the Golden Eagles, hitting six important free throws in the final 36 seconds of overtime to help Brockport seal the win.
Lee led scoring with a total of 19 points, including five big three pointers. Lyerly recorded a career-high 18 points, shooting 6-9 from the floor. Ivy finished the game with 13 points, three steals and two assists. Brandon Caruthers had a team-high six assists and five steals. Patrick Coyle was big down low for the Golden Eagles. Coyle registered a season-high nine blocked shots, ranking third best in school history. The nine blocks is the most since 1991.
As a team, the Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 33.8% (23-68) from the floor, 22.6% (7-31) from long range and 71.4% (20-28) from the free throw line. Brockport forced 22 turnovers throughout the game.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday night for an 8 pm SUNYAC matchup against Plattsburgh at home.
