Gymnastics Edges Cortland in Matchup of Top Teams

Jennifer Sklenar scores a key 9.675 on balance beam for the Golden Eagles

Amanda Carney helped Brockport edge Cortland with a strong floor routine

Freshman Jennifer Sklenar (Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney) finished second overall with a team-leading 9.675 on the final event of the day with balance beam to lead The College at Brockport Gymnastics team to a very close 188.250-188.200 victory over Cortland Sunday in a regular-season matchup of the two top teams in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in Cortland.

Brockport took a lead in the meet after three rotations with a 48.275 score on floor exercise but Cortland finished the meet on floor and scored a 47.825 forcing the Golden Eagles to score at least a 46.885 to win the meet. With Sklenar's score leading the way on the beam, Brockport scored a 46.900 to edge the Red Dragons.

The Golden eagles opened the meet on the uneven bars and was down by nearly two points after the first rotation. The top three performances on the bars were by Stephanie Schuler (Purcellville, VA/Hickory) with a 9.65, Casey Addis (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) with a 9.475 and Natalie Manga (Fresh Meadows, NY/Benjamin N. Cardozo) with a 9.3.

In the second rotation, Brockport evened the score with a 47.550 on vaulting while Cortland scored 45.325 on bars. Amanda Carney (Walpole, MA/Walpole) led the way on vault with a 9.65. Schuler and Olivia Sylvestro (Palm City, FL/Martin County) each scored 9.5 on their vaults while Lexi King (Glendale, AZ/Mountain Ridge) added a 9.475 and Gabrielle Petitto (Selden, NY/Newfield) chipped in a 9.425 for the Golden Eagles.

In the third rotation, Brockport took a lead of nearly a full point with a 48.275 team score on floor exercise. Carney and King each scored 9.775 to lead Brockport while Sylvestro added a 9.675, Lily Jagodzinski scored a 9.575 and Sklenar finished the Brockport scoring with a 9.475.

Cortland finished on the floor in the final rotation and put together a score of 47.825 including a 9.85 from Courtney Mangini forcing Brockport to have a good rotation on beam to win.

Sklenar scored her 9.675 while Amanda Rota (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) added a 9.475 and Kathryn Coghlan (Wappingers Falls, NY/John Jay East Fishkill) had a 9.425 and Samantha Spaid (Green, OH/Green) chipped in a 9.35 for the Golden Eagles.
