John Ivy (Rochester, NY/East) hit a career-high 40 points, including a school record 17 free throws, but The College at Brockport men's basketball team dropped a close State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game to Plattsburgh 92-89 on Friday night in Brockport, snapping the Golden Eagles 15 game win-streak.
Despite trailing the entire second half, #15 Brockport (16-2,10-1 SUNYAC) managed to cut Plattsburgh's (16-3, 10-2 SUNYAC) lead to just one after Ivy drained a three pointer with only 11 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, Plattsburgh won the free throw battle in the final seconds and held on for the win.
Both teams kept the game close in the opening minutes. Ivy started up scoring with a quick layup at 19:40. Two free throws from Brandon Caruthers (Rochester, NY/East) at 15:21 put the Golden Eagles up by four. A layup from Ivy with under 10 minutes to play gave Brockport a six point lead, the largest they would have all game.
Plattsburgh slowly chipped away and was able to take back the lead with 2:57 left in the first half. The Cardinals closed out the half with an 8-0 run to take a 43-36 lead and the momentum heading into halftime.
Dorian Hayden (East Northport, NY/Northport) opened up the second half with two free throws for the Golden Eagles at 19:46. A layup from Hayden and then from Ivy cut Plattsburgh's lead to one at 17:10. Brockport continued trying to close the gap, but the Cardinals had an answer every time the Golden Eagles got close.
Plattsburgh put together a key 9-3 run, giving them their largest lead of the game, 8 points with 10:46 to play.
Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) managed to pull the Golden Eagles to within one point with a three point play at 8:20, but the Cardinals were able to once again push out their lead. In a dramatic final minute of play, Plattsburgh was able to win the game from the free throw line.
Ivy led Brockport on offense with 40 points. The last 40 point performance was by Rob Gilliam in 1973 against Buffalo State. Ivy was also hit an outstanding 17 free throws, breaking the school record of 16 held by Ed Storto. Storto hit 16 in a game against Cortland in 1955.
Caruthers added 11 points and a team-high four assists, while Lyerly also chipped in 11 points. Â Olusola Adeniran (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) pulled down a team high 15 rebounds.
Brockport shot uncharacteristically cold from the three point line, hitting only 3-of-18 (16.7%). The Golden Eagles finished the game shooting 36.5% (27-74) from the floor and 78% (32-41) from the free throw line.
Brockport returns to action on Saturday afternoon for another SUNYAC matchup at home. The Golden Eagles take on Potsdam at 4 pm.
