Sophomore Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning to give The College at Brockport Baseball team an 8-7 lead en route to a 9-7 victory Monday afternoon over Washington & Jefferson at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.

The game, moved up an hour to avoid a predicted rain storm, featured four lead changes and four multi-run innings.

Washington & Jefferson (6-3), ranked #25 in the latest D3Baseball.com national poll, took a 3-0 lead with three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning but Brockport (6-2) rebounded and took a 5-3 lead pushing five runners across the plate in the top of the fourth.

Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) hit an infield single and took second on a throwing error. Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) was hit by pitch with one out and John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) blasted a three-run homer to left field to knot the game at 3-3. The Golden Eagles added two more runs when Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) reached on an error and Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) walked before Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) singled to score both runners.

Brockport added a run in the seventh. Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) singled to start the inning and Gianni doubled down the left field line but Wilson was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first. Gianni advanced to third on a groundout and Hurlimann singled through the right side of the infield to chase Gianni home.

The Presidents answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead as the steady rain started to come down.

In the top of the ninth inning, Brockport rallied to regain the lead. Pinch hitter Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) reached base on an error with one out in the inning. Two batters later, Gianni worked the count and earned a two-out walk putting runners on first and second. Burghardt followed with a double to the left centerfield gap as Brockport took an 8-7 lead. Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) was inserted as a pinch runner and tried intentionally to make an out to end the half inning with the rain getting heavier but a throw to third base to tag out Tracy sailed over the head of the third baseman allowing Tracy to score for a 9-7 Brockport lead.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Washington & Jefferson threatened with a pair of singles to open the inning. After a pop out to second base caused the first out of the inning, a line drive out to Hurlimann at first allowed the senior to convert the double play touching first to get the runner out and end the game in dramatic fashion.

Gianni led Brockport with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two walks and three runs scored. Craig had three RBI with his homer and Burghardt had a pair of RBI. Zack Melino (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) started and went four innings while Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) came on for the next three innings. Zack Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) was credited with the win throwing one inning and Bradley Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) earned the save pitching the scoreless ninth.
