Box Score
Senior Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY Bethpage) and juniors John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), Jake Kenney (Hornell, NY/Alfred-Almond) and Anthony Barbetto (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) had three hits each for The College at Brockport Baseball team Saturday in a wild 18-12 victory for the Golden Eagles over Hilbert College in the first game back from the Florida Spring Training trip.
The game, played on the turf field at Monroe CC, took place less than 24 hours after Brockport (10-3) finished up its Florida trip with a 19-4 win over Oswego. The temperature change from Florida where it was 85 degrees Friday was nearly 50 degrees as the temperature only reached the mid 30's in Rochester.
That change in temperature may have been one of the reasons Brockport had a poor start to the game. Hilbert (2-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead sending eight batters to the plate in the top of the first inning. The inning featured a triple, a double and a pair of singles as the Hawks jumped out to the early lead.
The Golden Eagles responded right away, sending eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning and regained the lead with four runs. With one out, Tracy was hit by pitch and advanced to second as Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) grounded out to third base. With two outs in the inning, Craig doubled, Bradley Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) singled and Colin Grande (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) tripled with each picking up a run batted tying the score at 3-3.
After Sean Geisel (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) walked to put runners at the corners, the junior intentionally faked a steal drawing a throw from the catcher and allowing Grande to score from third base. Geisel was tagged out on the play but not until after the run scored to give Brockport the 4-3 lead.
The Golden Eagles extended the lead in the second when Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) walked and moved to third on a wild pitch. Tracy singled him home for the 5-3 lead.
Hilbert tied the score in the top of the third with a pair of runs on three singles and a sacrifice bunt but Brockport took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Grande was hit by pitch and Geisel followed with a double to deep right centerfield to chase Grande home and give Brockport the 6-5 lead.
The Golden Eagles looked to blow the game open in the bottom of the fourth sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs for a 13-5 advantage. Barbetto had two hits in the inning as he led off the rally with a double and singled later scoring two more runners. Kenney also had a run scoring double in the inning.
The large lead was short lived however as Hilbert responded with seven runs of its own in the top of the fifth inning and moved to within a run at 13-12. The inning started with four singles and a walk accounting for three Hawk runs. After a pitching change, Hilbert added a run scoring single, a sacrifice fly and a two-run double before the inning finally ended with a grounder to third base.
Brockport scored another run in the bottom of the inning as Tracy led off with a double and scored two batters later as Craig hit the second of his three doubles on the day.
After a leadoff walk for Hilbert in the sixth, Dakota Stackhouse (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) was brought in to pitch and shut down the Hilbert lineup for the remainder of the game.
Brockport scored four additional runs in the bottom of the sixth as Kenney and Barbetto each singled before Wilson doubled, Tracy and Burghardt each singled and Craig hit his third double of the game.
Stackhouse put together three 1-2-3 innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to complete the game.
Westling, Wilson, Grande and Geisel added two hits each for Brockport while Craig and Tracy led the team with three runs batted in each. Michael McFerran (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) earned his third victory of the season in relief and Stackhouse picked up the save with his long relief appearance.
