Sophomore pitcher Tyler Clifford (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) threw five and a third solid innings and the Golden Eagles scored nine runs in the first three innings as The College at Brockport Baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 9-5 victory over the Merchant Marine Academy Friday night at the Baseball Heaven Complex in Yaphank, NY.
Brockport (1-0) scored twice in the first, three times in the second and four more times in the third inning building a 9-0 lead.
Merchant Marine trimmed the lead to 9-4 pushing across four runs in the top of the fifth inning but the Brockport bullpen allowed just one run the rest of the way as the Golden Eagles recorded the first victory of the season.
Zach Lander (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili), Jake Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) and Bradley Westling (Dunkirk, NY/Dunkirk) combined to allow just one hit and one run over the final three innings to seal the win.
Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit), Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton), Corey Hamula (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) and Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had two hits each to lead the Brockport offense. Peake had a double and Hurlimann had a home run.
Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) had a double and three runs batted in while Hurlimann knocked in two runs for Brockport. Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) scored twice for the Golden Eagles.
