McCarthy Helps Baseball Sweep Past St. Joe’s

Senior pitcher tosses six shutout innings in game one of doubleheader

Senior Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) held St. Joseph's College – Long Island scoreless for the first six innings with seven strikeouts leading The College at Brockport Baseball team to a 6-0 shutout in game one and the Golden Eagles completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory in the night cap Sunday afternoon in Patchogue, NY.

McCarthy scattered four hits and walked just one batter through six innings and fellow senior Rob Stankiewicz (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) completed the shutout with a scoreless seventh as Brockport (3-1) won the opener 6-0.

In game two, the Golden Eagles fell behind allowing three St. Joseph's (2-2) runs in the third inning but answered with a five-run inning in the top of the fourth and held on for a 7-5 win despite managing just four hits and making six errors in the field.

In game one, Brockport scored in each of the first four innings with one in the first, two in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth. Dan Hurlimann (Rochester, NY/Hilton) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Pete Wilson (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) in the first inning.

In the second inning, Brendan Swayne (Seaford, NY/Plainedge) scored on an error and later in the inning Wilson had an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0. Hurlimann scored on another error in the third and junior John Craig (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) hit a two-run single with the bases loaded in the fourth to round out the scoring.

In game two, Brockport scored first with a Mike Gianni (Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) RBI single in the top of the third inning. St. Joseph's rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a two-run advantage.

The lead did not last long as Brockport scored five times in the top of the fourth inning for a 6-3 advantage. Swayne had an RBI single, Shawn Peake (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored on an error and Raymond Bozek (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Lakeland) added an RBI single for the first three runs of the rally. Gianni drew a bases loaded walk for another run and Wesley Burghardt (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) hit a sacrifice fly to close out the scoring in the big inning for the Golden Eagles.

St. Joseph's trimmed the lead to a single run with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth but Brockport regained the two-run lead in the top of the fifth. Swayne lifted another sacrifice fly to center field scoring Peake from third and the Golden Eagles held the lead for the final 2 ½ innings.

Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored a run batted in and two stolen bases in the opener. Craig was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Hurlimann had a triple in the opener and one of Brockport's four hits in game two. Swayne and Gianni each had a hit and two runs batted in.

Juniors Zack Melino (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) and Mike McFerran (Albany, NY/Catholic Central) each threw three innings in the second game while Ben Fuess (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Jake Bunce (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) combined to close out the game in the seventh inning. McFerran was credited with the win and Bunce picked up the save for the Golden Eagles.
