Box Score Junior Patrick Modzelewski (Brooklyn, NY/Msgr. McClancy) led The College at Brockport to a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory Friday evening over Potsdam, scoring 17 points in the 81-66 win on the campus of Brockport.
Brockport (7-8, 4-4 SUNYAC) shot nearly 50% from the field (29-of-59), making five three pointers in the first half of action to jump out to a 39-30 lead. The Golden Eagles forced 21 turnovers, including 12 steals that led to 29 points.
The Golden Eagles led for nearly the entire game but Potsdam pulled within one point with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Brockport however quickly rebuilt a commanding lead as Matthew Smith (East Northport, NY/Northport) found Daniel Aiello (Syracuse, NY/Solvay) in the paint, for a hard fought three point play as Aiello drew the contact to go with his layup.
One minute later Aiello passed the ball to Modzelewski who drained a three pointer to give Brockport a 29-22 lead. Brockport scored 20 points in the first half off of Potsdam turnovers to overcome the Bears 26-11 rebounding advantage.
The Bears were only able to pull within five points in the second half when Brockport led 49-44 with 12 minutes remaining. However the Green and Gold quickly responded with an 8-0 run within the next four minutes of action. Terence Thomas' (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) layup with less than one minute remaining was the final shot made of the game and gave the Golden Eagles its largest lead of the game.
Smith and Mitch Cote (Rochester, NY/Penfield) paced the Golden Eagle offense with 11 assists. Senior Lorenzo Joseph (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) also added three assists for Brockport, helping the team to a season high 21 assists.
Modzelewski led all scorers, while three other Golden Eagles finished with points in the double digits. Levi Pace (Medina, Ny/Medina) scored 14, Aiello scored 13 and Aaron White (North Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) scored 10. Paced finished the game with nine rebounds and an unbelievable six blocks.
Brockport continues its SUNYAC play at home tomorrow at 2 pm when it faces off with Plattsburgh, currently second in the SUNYAC standings.
