Box Score Junior Patrick Modzelewski (Brooklyn, NY/Msgr. McClancy) and sophomore Clifton Lyerly (Inwood, NY/Lawrence) led the offensive punch for The College at Brockport in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) victory over Oneonta Friday evening, as the Golden Eagles won 56-52 in the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium on the campus of Brockport.
Brockport (11-10, 8-6 SUNYAC) and Oneonta fought back and forth late in the second half as both teams went on runs to trade the leads. Levi Pace (Medina, NY/Medina) got the crowd into the game with an energetic drive to the basket and finishing with a powerful two handed slam. Oneonta would not let the game get out of hand though as it put a run together to take a one point lead at the six minute mark.
The Golden Eagles used an 8-2 run with less than six minutes left to regain the lead and never give it back. Modzelewski made a big three pointer with less than six minutes remaining to give Brockport the 44-42 edge.
The Golden Eagles responded to Oneonta's 10-3 run with Modzelewski's three putting Brockport ahead permanently. The Red Dragons did come within a single point in the closing seconds of the game but Pace's two big free throws put the Golden Eagles on top 55-52 with 14 seconds remaining.
Lyerly secured the defensive rebound after Oneonta missed a three point shot, in which he was immediately fouled. Lyerly hit one of two free throws to give Brockport a four point cushion. The Red Dragons attempted a final three point shot at the buzzer that was emphatically rejected by Pace to seal the Brockport victory.
In the first half the Green and Gold built a one point lead as both team's defenses were superb. Brockport held the 22-21 lead based on many contested shots and solid rebounding. The Golden Eagles held a 19-11 advantage in rebounds during the first half of play with Lyerly leading the way with six boards.
Modzelewski was 6-of-11 from the floor including four three pointers made, totaling 16 points while Lyerly added 12 points and nine rebounds. Also leading the way for Brockport was Pace who scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and totaled five blocks. Aaron White (North Tonawanda, NY/Canisius) also topped the double digit point marker with 10 points. Matthew Smith (East Northport, NY/Northport) dished the ball out to the tune of six assists.
The Golden Eagles return to action tomorrow on its home court when it hosts New Paltz at 2 pm, in the opening game of the Play4Kay event, in which all proceeds from the men and women's basketball game will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation.
