Box Score BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The phrase playing down to an opponent is used often in athletics but The College at Brockport Volleyball team played up to its opponent when it defeated Division II Roberts Wesleyan 3-0 Tuesday night on the road in front of an energetic crowd.
Brockport (1-0) utilized a strong all-around game to sweep the Red Hawks by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-23. A true collective team effort helped Brockport win in such convincing fashion as multiple players had strong games as an influx of new talent was displayed by Brockport.
Newcomer Sam Holdredge tallied nine kills, eight digs and two service aces throughout the contest to lead the Golden Eagles. Returning Golden Eagles Kayla Barber and Brianna Richardson also showcased the skills that helped Brockport clinch a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament bid last season.
Barber led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills while Richardson added six kills compared to zero attacking errors finishing the game with an unbelievable .600 attacking percentage.
Noelle Poloncarz picked up right where she left off last season as she totaled 18 assists on the night while Jamie Schlesinger and Rachel Fiser combined for 14 other assists.
Aimee Spilman was a force to be reckoned with from the service line finishing with two service aces but more importantly leading a string of eight straight Golden Eagle points in the second game to build a commanding lead. Jes Marini led Brockport with three aces, as the Golden Eagles had a 7-2 advantage in the aces category.
The Green and Gold's home opener is this weekend during the Brockport Volleyball Invitational. The first match will be against Penn St. Behrend on Friday at 4 pm with another match at 8 pm versus Houghton.
