ITHACA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team went up against some tough competition on Saturday, competing in the Cornell University Big Red Invite.
The Green and Gold went toe-to-toe with hosts Cornell, who took the meet with a score of 193.625 while Ithaca College finished second with a team score of 191.375. West Chester University of Pennsylvania finished third with a score of 190.600. The Golden Eagles worked for a team score of 190.575.
Despite a disappointing team finish, Brockport had top finishers on several events, with their highest place coming on the beam, where
Candis Kowalik took first in the meet with a score of 9.850.
Shelby Schumaker took ninth on the event, notching a 9.625 while
Jamie Sklenar was the Green and Gold's next best finisher, taking 14th with a score of 9.525.
The Golden Eagles had a strong showing on the floor as well, with
Stephanie Mager and
Brittany Vasile finishing in a tie for fourth, scoring a pair of 9.750's. Schumaker and Kowalik both placed in sixth, posting a pair of 9.725's.
Schumaker also had a strong showing on the vault, posting Brockport's top score of the meet on the event, a 9.525, which was good enough to earn seventh on the event. Kowalik took 13th, with a 9.475.
Amy Eck and Sklenar weren't't far off, finishing in a tie for 17th, with each scoring 9.425.
Allison Hester led the way for the Green and Gold on bars, with her routine earning a score of 9.625 and a ninth-place finish. Eck and
Bridgette Schaal each scored 9.550 to tie for 13th in the event.
Brockport had the lone all-around competitors of the meet, with both Kowalik and Mager each competing in all four events. Kowalik scored a 38.500 to take the all-around title and Mager posted a score of 36.750.
The Golden Eagles will look to bounce back on Feb. 17 when they host Rhode Island College. The meet will serve as the Green and Gold's annual 'Stick it to Caner' meet as well as senior day. The senior members of the Brockport team will be honored in a ceremony held following the completion of the meet.
