Brockport dazzles against Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport gymnastics team picked up their second win of the week, taking down SUNY Cortland on the road, 192.925-190.800.
 
The Golden Eagles improve to 7-4 on the year while the Red Dragons fall to 2-9 in 2018.
 
Brockport had a strong start to the meet, sweeping the top six spots on their opening event, the uneven bars. Allison Hester took first with a score of 9.725, with Taylor Keough placing second with a score of 9.650. Bridgette Schaal (9.625) placed third, Miranda Shaine (9.575) finished fourth, Candis Kowalik nabbed fifth (9.550), while Amy Eck (9.400) finished sixth. As a team, the Golden Eagles topped the Red Dragons by a margin of 48.125-46.050.
 
The Golden Eagles faltered on one of their stronger events, narrowly falling in the vault to the hosts by a margin of 47.850-47.625. Stephanie Mager placed first on the event overall, with a score of 9.700. Schaal was the next Green and Gold finisher, taking fifth with a score of 9.575.
 
The two squads were dead-even on the beam, with each team turning in a score of 48.150 on the apparatus. The dead-heat spread to the individual scores, with Kimberly Musall tying for the first-place spot, with a 9.750 and Kowalik finishing in a tie for the second highest score with a 9.700. Shelby Schumaker finished just behind second, with a score of 9.675.
 
Head coach John Feeny's squad excelled on the floor, turning in their highest score of the meet, bypassing Cortland, 49.025-48.750. Brittany Vasile led the charge, scoring a near-perfect and career-high 9.900. Kowalik placed third, with a 9.850 while Schaal tied for fifth with a score of 9.800. Schumaker took seventh, scoring a 9.775 while Keough rounded out the scoring with a 9.700, taking ninth.
 
Kowalik was the lone athlete to compete as an all-around gymnast, scoring a season high 38.575.
 
Brockport will be back in action on Feb. 25 when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to compete in the Ithaca College Invitational.
