NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team joined Rhode Island College at Southern Connecticut State this weekend for the Owls opening weekend meet.
The Golden Eagles took second place overall with a 188.850 finish, just missing first behind the Owls at 191.125, but securing a strong second place lead over the Anchorman of RIC at 178.450. Brockport moves to 5-1 and on the season.
Despite having strong showing in each of the four events, the Green and Gold turned in their highest score of the meet on the floor with a 48.475.
Candis Kowalik and
Kimberly Musall's routines grabbed each of them a 9.750 score to tie for second place. Closely behind the two was freshman
Alexis Castellaneta who turned in a 9.725, putting her in a tie for fourth place.
The senior class brought it home on the vault, with
Stephanie Mager topping the leaderboard with a score of 9.575 for the second-place slot. Kowalik's 9.525 finish snagged her fourth-place, with both scores leading the team to a 47.075 overall.
The Golden Eagles fate in the uneven parallel bars was very similar to that of the vault, taking the second and fourth place spots as well.
Nicole Jackson led the team on the afternoon with a 9.575, followed by
Taylor Keough at 9.525.
Rachel Doll and
Amy Eck broke the top 10 as well, with Eck's 9.325 grabbing seventh and Doll's 9.175 earning eighth.
Kowalik helped the team shine on the balance beam, taking third place in the event with a score of 9.650.
Alexis Frankowski and Castellaneta were the next finishers for the Golden Eagles, who's 9.475 scores put them in a tie for seventh place.
Dorothy Wernick fell just behind them with a ninth-place finish of 9.100.
The team brings their efforts back to Brockport next weekend where they will host the BSG Eagle Empire Invite. The Golden Eagles will host Rhode Island College and Ithaca College on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
