CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team opened up the 2019 season with a win Tuesday afternoon against SUNY Cortland. The team had a stellar opening day, trumping the Red Dragons 186.575 to 182.950. This is Brockport's eighth straight first meet win since the 2010-11 season.
The Golden Eagles outscored the Red Dragons in three of the four events, only falling short on the floor. The Green and Gold dominated the leaderboard, capturing a first-place finish in all four of the events. The team's strongest finish of the day came on the beam, where they posted a 46.875, led by
Alexis Frankowski and
Dorothy Wernick, who each recorded a 9.425 through both routines.
Stephanie Mager was the driving force for the Green and Gold on the vault, finishing with a score of 9.625, the best appearance amongst both teams in the event.
Jamie Sklenar (9.350),
Alexis Castellaneta (9.275), and
Candis Kowalik (9.275) pieced together solid finishes as well, securing third and fourth place respectively.
On the bars, Kowalik led the way for a victory, recording a 9.500 finish for first place, followed closely by teammate
Taylor Keough who posted a second-place finish of 9.425. The bars were the second strongest event for the Golden Eagles, with the team capturing the first four spots on the leaderboard, posting a team score of 46.700.
Despite falling just short overall on the floor, Keough and
Kimberly Musall had standout performances, Keough securing a first-place finish with a 9.750 finish and Musall with an even 9.500 finish for fourth place.
The Golden Eagles are headed to Providence, Rhode Island Saturday where they are scheduled to compete against the Anchormen as well as Springfield College and Ursinus College at 12 p.m.
