Golden Eagles Go Head to Head With Red Dragons In SUNYAC Semifinals

The College at Brockport volleyball team is set to travel to Geneseo Friday afternoon for the semifinal round of the SUNYAC playoffs, where they will take on the Red Dragons from Cortland.

Regional Recognition: After securing themselves a bye in the first round, the Golden Eagles hosted their final home tournament of the year, picking up three more wins while also topping two regionally ranked teams. With a win over then No. 2 regionally ranked Clarkson and No. 9 ranked St. Lawrence, the Golden Eagles jumped three spots on the leader board, putting them seventh overall in the NCAA DIII Regional rankings, above both Geneseo (8) and Cortland (9).

Mastro Posts Career High: Mastro has been an offensive powerhouse for the Golden Eagles this season and last Friday was a perfect example of the strength she brings to the front line. Mastro posted a career-high 22 kills against Clarkson Friday night, accounting for close to half of the team's total kills. The junior also provided two aces and 12 digs, leading the Golden Eagles to a four-set win over the top regionally ranked Golden Knights. Mastro currently leads the team in points (326.5), kills (252), and hitting percentage (.296).

Budnick's Dominates Serve: Shelby Budnick has made her presence known with her ability to effectively execute the serve, continuously leading the Golden Eagles in service aces. Last weekend, the sophomore recorded 10 service aces in two games, allowing her to jump to the SUNYAC leader in service aces (66) and service aces per set (0.67), tied with Oneonta's Jessica Fowler.

Tournament Breakdown: The Golden Eagles, along with Cortland and Oneonta will travel to Geneseo Friday afternoon for back to back semifinal matchups. The Green and Gold will take on the Red Dragons from Cortland at 4 p.m. followed by the Knights and Red Dragons from Oneonta at 6 p.m. The winners of both matchups will go head to head in the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Red Dragons Sweep Cortland: The Red Dragons have some momentum going into Friday's matchup, coming off a strong 3-0 win over Oswego on Tuesday night. Cortland put up 40 total kills and only seven errors against the Lakers, led by Hannah Southcott, Maya Owens and Bridgette Moran who each tallied eight kills apiece. The team came out hot offensively, holding the Lakers to only 10 points in the first set. The second gave the Lakers some room to work with however, kills from Nadia Moore and Bridgette Moran allowed the Red Dragons to continue their win streak to two. The momentum continued in Cortland's favor into the third, as the Red Dragons picked up another dominating win in set three, 25-13.

Last Time They Met: The Golden Eagles and the Red Dragons closed out the conference season against one another, with the Green and Gold coming out victorious in four sets. With the win, the Golden Eagles were able to swap places with Cortland in conference seeding and secure themselves a bye in the first round of the tournament. Mastro and Lindsey Luce led the team offensively, accounting for 28 of the teams 51 kills.
