Golden Eagles Make History at NCGA Regional Competition

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team made history Saturday afternoon in their appearance at the NCGA East Regional Competition, recording their highest team score. The Golden Eagles went head to head with five other schools including SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College, Springfield College, Ursinus College and Rhode Island College.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – 
 
Vault
  • The Green and Gold posted a team total of 48.175 in the event.
  • Candis Kowalik opened up the day for the Golden Eagles on the vault, grabbing a first-place finish of 9.750.
  • Fellow senior Stephanie Mager followed closely behind, posting a 9.700, putting her in a three-way tie for fourth-place.
Uneven Parallel Bars
  • The Golden Eagles had five athletes rank in the top 10 routines on the uneven bars.
  • Rachel Doll and Taylor Keough posted the strongest finishes, Doll holding first place with a 9.650 score and Keough in second with a 9.575.
  • The success continued with Amy Eck and Kowalik, who then added a pair of 9.500's to grab a three-way tie fourth place.
  • Freshman Nicole Jackson closed out the top 10 holding on to 10th place with a score of 9.375. 
Balance Beam
  • The balance beam was the second strongest finish of the day for the Green and Gold as they led all five teams with a final score of 48.625.
  • Kowalik picked up her second first-place finish of the day, dominating the beam with an even 9.800.
  • Alexis Castellaneta continued the dominance, trailing just behind Kowalik in second place with a 9.750.
  • Four more Golden Eagles held top honors, including Alexis Frankowski, Kimberly Musall, Mager and Olivia DeLuca.
  • Frankowski and Musall posted a pair 9.700's putting them in a five-way tie for third place followed next by Mager in eighth-place with a 9.675.
  • DeLuca rounded out the scoring for the Green and Gold with a 9.550 allowing her to secure 11th place.
Floor
  • Brockport secured their victory on the floor, nailing their strongest team finish of the day with a 49.300.
  • Castellaneta led the way with a 9.900 for a three-way tie for first-place and a personal best for her in the event.
  • Kowalik was the next to rank for the Green and Gold, posting a fourth-place finish of 9.875.
  • Keough, Musall, and Mager followed suit, grabbing the next three spots on the leaderboard. Keough and Musall both posted 9.850 routines for fifth-place followed by Mager in tie for seventh-place with a 9.825.
KEY STATISTICS – 
  • The Golden Eagles 193.700 score was the highest ever all-around team score in the East and the group beat the previous school record of 193.325 set in 2017.
  • Kowalik was the solo All-Around athlete for the Green and Gold, posting another first-place finish, leading the event with 38.925.
  • To solidify a great day, the Golden Eagles added two more honors to the list, as Kowalik was named the 2019 NCGA East Region Gymnast of the Year and Castellaneta was named the 2019 NCGA East Region Rookie of the Year.
 
UP NEXT – 
 
With their first-place finish, the Golden Eagles qualify for the NCGA National Championship which will take place March 23rd in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
