BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport field hockey team enters their first full week of competition with two consecutive home contests, starting with Keuka College Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Dominating Season Opener: The Green and Gold opened up the 2019 season with a bang, notching their largest marginal win in program history over Wells College. The team took down the visiting Express, 13-0, to start the year 1-0. The team's fourth straight season opening win was a result of a strong team effort, as 12 different players registered at least one point. Junior
Meaghan Lurz and sophomore
Alyssa Fuccillo led the scoring front, each collecting a pair of goals.
Bailey Lazore,
Olivia Hayden,
Kayli Brown,
Olivia Douglas, and
Katie Ziemba each added a goal of their own.
Not only was the Golden Eagle's starting 11 a dominating force offensively, but the strength of their substitutes was impressive as well.
Katelynn Mello,
Ella Sturm and Fuccillo provided a constant scoring threat to the Express defense posting four goals, four assists, and eight collective shots on goal.
Last Time They Met: The Keuka Wolves were the opening matchup for Brockport in the 2018 season, with the Green and Gold coming out victorious, 4-2.
Katie Ziemba led the game with two goals, one to open the game and another to close things out. Ziemba and Mello were a dynamic duo, accounting for four of the teams nine shots on goal, with Mello posting three assists. The Golden Eagles held the Wolves to two total goals and shut them out in the second half to secure the win.
What To Expect: The Green and Gold are going to be reliant on the strength of their team offensive effort going into Tuesday night's matchup. The Wolves welcome back six seniors and a full crew of returners, with only four freshman joining the team this season. Junior Nicole Wilson was a key asset for Keuka last year producing opportunities in front of the net. Lexi Appleby and Skylar Gilmore each netted a goal in last year's matchup.
Up Next: The Golden Eagles will continue their homestand on Saturday where they will welcome Sage College to the Dr. Linda and Class of '69 Field Hockey Arena for a 12 p.m. matchup.
