BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In their first week of competition, The College at Brockport women's gymnastics team put up two strong performances against Cortland and Rhode Island College to start their season at a perfect 2-0.
Two for Two: After moving past the Red Dragons on home turf, the Golden Eagles traveled to Providence, R.I. for a dual meet with the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College. The Green and Gold's 186.800 team score allowed them a healthy lead over the Anchorwomen's 177.750, handing them their first loss of the season.
Lexi Castellaneta had a strong day for the Golden Eagles on the vault, beam and floor, leading the vault and beam with a 9.575 and the beam with a 9.400 score. On the vault,
Nikki Jackson and
Jamie Sklenar also went to work, nailing a 9.550 and 9.450 for second and third place respectively. The Golden Eagles followed up the vault with a dominating performance on the bars, securing all top five finishes.
Amy Eck led the pack this time with a 9.400, followed by
Gabbi Gare (9.375) and
Kim Musall (9.275).
Jensen Todd provided the strength on the beam, finishing first overall with a 9.425 finish. In typical fashion, the Golden Eagles strongest performance of the day came on the floor where they team finished with a 47.025 total. After Castellaneta's 9.575 routine,
Courtney Kamberalis tied for third-place with a score of 9.500 even followed closely by teammate
Kyra Figurelli who scored a 9.450.
Scouting the Competition: This weekend the Golden Eagles will welcome Ithaca College and Springfield College to the Tuttle North Gymnastics Center for their final home meet of the season.
Ithaca College- This will be the Bombers first meet of the season followed by a dual with Ursinus College. The Bombers had two athletes with standout performances at the National Championship last season including Courtney Christoforo who grabbed the individual title on the uneven bars with a final score of 9.675. With the performance, Christoforo became the eighth gymnast in the program's history to earn an individual title at the NCGA Championships. Rachel Lee also received recognition for her consistent performance all year, closing out the season by being named the 2019 NCGA Senior Athlete of the Year. The team finished fifth overall with a 187.975.
Springfield College- The Pride have had a bit of a rocky start to the 2020 season, picking up three straight losses to Brown, Southern Connecticut and Yale at their home opener last weekend. Thus far, the Pride have seen strong performances from Taylor Jackson on the vault, Sara King on the bars, Taylor Campagnone on the beam and MacKenzie MacLeod on the floor. The team finished fourth at the NCGA East Reginal with a 188.100 final score and had two gymnasts earn All-America honors for the second consecutive year at the National Championships.
Senior Day Recognition: During this weekend's meet, the Golden Eagles will also recognize their five seniors for their hard work and dedication to the program. The senior class includes
Rachel Gurgiolo,
Courtney Kamberalis,
Alyssa Klock,
Kim Musall and
Shelby Schumaker.
Shatter The Stigma: In addition to senior day, the Golden Eagles will also be taking part in supporting the #ShatterTheStigma initiative started by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC). The event aims to bring awareness to mental health and the role it plays in athletics as well as the importance of speaking up.
What's to Follow: The Golden Eagles will be on the road next weekend for a dual matchup with Southern Connecticut State University, Sunday, Jan. 26 at 1 p.m.
