Gymnastics set to face the Bombers for the second time this season

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – SUNY Brockport women's gymnastics team is set to take the floor again this Saturday at Ithaca College for a dual meet with the Bombers at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles have competed in five meets thus far, recording four dual wins and a third-place finish at last weekend's Division I competition at Southern Connecticut State. This weekend will be the halfway point for the Green and Gold in their regular season schedule.
 
If History Repeats: These two teams have already competed against one another once this season at the Golden Eagles Senior Day/Shatter the Stigma meet. The Green and Gold moved past the Bombers in dominating fashion, bringing home a 189.500 to 184.050 win. The Golden Eagles currently hold a 25-8 record against the Bombers and a 7-3 record over the last 10 matchups. When facing the Bombers, the Green and Gold currently hold a 12-0 record at home and an 11-7 record on the road.
 
Owl Home Opener: In their last outing, the Golden Eagles finished third overall out of four teams at Southern Connecticut State's quad meet. The team fell at the hands of the Cornell Big Red and the host Owls but found victory over Springfield College.
 
Brockport closed out the afternoon with a 186.450 final score with strong performances from a number of different gymnasts. Jamie Sklenar led the way on the vault, posting a three-way second place tie with a score of 9.725. Nicole Jackson and Lexi Castellaneta crack the top 10 as well, finishing fifth and sixth respectively, marked at 9.675 and 9.625. The vault was the Golden Eagles strongest team finish of the day with an overall score of 48.100.
 
Amy Eck and Gabbi Gare followed that up with top finishes on the bars. Eck secured a second-placed tie with a score of 9.600 and Gare a fourth-place tie with a score of 9.450. Castellaneta grabbed her second top 10 finish of the day with a seventh-place score of 9.625 on the beam followed by Shelby Schumaker's 9.550.
 
The Golden Eagles second-best team performance of the day came on the floor where they recorded three top 10 finishes for a 47.500 total. Kyra Figurelli and Castellaneta nailed a pair of 9.625's for a fifth-place tie followed by Sklenar in ninth with a score of 9.525. Gina Ferdinandi rounded out the scoring with a 9.425.
 
The Nation's Best: The Green and Gold find themselves atop the leader board of Division III Gymnastics for the second week in a row, with an average All-Around score of 186.994 and a team high 189.500. The team also ranks number one on the floor as well with an average team score of 47.600 and a team high 48.025. Brockport then ranks second overall on the vault with an average 47.388 score and a team high 48.100, just behind Centenary College followed by third in both the uneven bars and balance beam. The Golden Eagles are averaging a 45.581 on the bars and a 46.350 high as well as a 46.425 average on the beam and 47.800 high.
 
In addition to the team's high rank, the Golden Eagles have a number of individual gymnasts who have garnered national attention as well.
 
Jackson and Figurelli share the spotlight on the vault; Jackson ranked second overall in the nation, her highest score being a 9.675 and Figurelli tied for fourth with a 9.550 average score. Castellaneta just misses the top 10 in the event, ranked 12th overall with a 9.513 average.
 
Eck represents Brockport in the top 10 on the uneven bars, ranked fifth overall with a 9.444 average and season high 9.600 even. On the balance beam, Castellaneta and Jensen Todd rank amongst the top 20, both tied for 16th overall with 9.381 averages. Castellaneta then finds herself atop the list on the floor as well, ranked fifth overall with a 9.644 average. The sophomore is joined on the floor by Chayna Earle who is tied for sixth with a 9.625 average and Figurelli ranked ninth with a 9.569 average.
 
What's Next: The Golden Eagles next opponent will be Yale University Sunday, Feb. 9 in New Haven CT. This will be the first time the Green and Gold will face the Bulldogs since January of 2012.
