Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team is at home Tuesday night for the Play4Kay game against Fredonia. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
More Than Just A Game: Proceeds generated will be given to the Kay Yow Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Cancer Fund. The WBCA works with college teams from across the country to organize "Play4Kay" events on their campuses to raise money in honor and memory of the former North Carolina State Head Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow, who passed away in January of 2009 after battling with cancer. Since its inception in 2007, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund has raised more than 7.5 million dollars for that are battling breast cancer and any other form of female cancer. The Play4Kay initiative is one of the organizations largest fundraisers. This year the Kay Yow Fund is partnering with Pledge It to host the Play4Kay National Free Throw Challenge in an effort to bring communities together and honor survivors in the fight against all cancers affecting women. Honoring Justin Summers: The senior forward has had quite the career here at Brockport, which includes joining the 1,000-career points club last season against Cortland, and will be recognized prior to the game for his accomplishments on the court. Summers is currently 14
th on the all-time scoring list with 1,256 points in his career. With 603 rebounds, he is 10
th in program history, and is just the fourth player in school history to have over 1,000 points and 600 boards for a career. Additionally, he has a career field goal percentage of 54.3%, which is fourth best in school history. Justin is the program's all-time leader for blocks, sending away 168 shots in his four years on the court. In his time at Brockport, Summers has been named a 3
rd-Team Pre-Season All-American and earned 1
st-Team All-SUNYAC twice.
Just Outside the Top 25: After entering the receiving six votes in last week's D3hoops.com national poll, Brockport earned 15 votes in the most recent poll. Since four teams dropped out of the rankings and only two teams (Albion and UW-La Crosse) receiving more votes outside the Top 25, the Green and Gold are on the verge of cracking the national rankings.
All We Do is Win: The Golden Eagles have been unstoppable lately, as they are currently on an 11-game win streak. With a record of 18-3 overall and 13-1 in the conference, Brockport has just one loss since the calendar changed to 2020. The team is an undefeated, 9-0, on its home court so far this season, marking the best start at home in over a decade. Brockport is on its longest win streak since rattling off 15-straight back in the 2013-14 year.
Grimsley's Getting Busy: Tyree Grimsley has played his best basketball since putting on the Green and Gold in recent games. In a big win over Oneonta, he put up his first double-double since coming to Brockport. Grimsley scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds, which were both personal-bests since becoming a Golden Eagle. He then followed that up the next game with 19 points and nine rebounds, coming up just shy of a second double-double. Over the past two games, the junior is averaging 17.5 points, 10 rebounds, and shooting 80% from the floor.
SUNYAC's Clinched: After going 3-0 last week in conference play, the Golden Eagles have officially secured a spot in the SUNYAC Tournament following the regular season. Their 13-1 mark in the conference is currently best in the SUNYAC. Potsdam (12-2) and Oneonta (10-2) have also clinched spots for postseason play, with final seeding still undecided.
Fredonia Matchup: The Blue Devils are holding a record of 7-14 overall and 3-11 in SUNYAC competition going into Tuesday's game. Fredonia has lost six straight, including a loss the last time these two teams met. Brockport defeated Fredonia, 88-60, featuring five double-digit scorers for the Green and Gold.
Tyler Collins led all scorers with 17 on the night, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor.
Senior Day: Brockport is at home once again this Saturday for the final regular season home contest of the year. It will be Senior Day, as the seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game. The team will take on Geneseo for a 4 pm tip-off.
