BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The SUNY Brockport women's gymnastics team is set to compete in the first annual Tumble and Rumble event hosted by Cornell University. For the first time in the Big Red's athletics history, the gymnastics and wrestling teams will host a combined meet in Cornell's Newman Arena.
The meet will feature non-stop simultaneous action with both gymnastics and wrestling competing at the same time in the same arena. The wrestling team will host North Carolina while the gymnastics team hosts the Golden Eagles, Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland. With both teams competing at the same time, seating will be limited. Individually, Brockport has a number of gymnasts who rank amongst DIII's best, including
Jamie Sklenar (11th) and
Lexi Castellaneta (13th) on the vault,
Amy Eck (3rd) on the uneven bars and Castellaneta (6th) and Chayna Earle (7th) on the floor.
The Golden Eagles are coming off of their first dual loss of the season to Division I Yale University, where they recorded their second highest team finish of 188.750, just behind their 189.500 best on senior day.
The Golden Eagles held their own against the Bulldogs, posting a number of strong individual routines across the board. The team was led by
Lexi Castellaneta and
Jamie Sklenar, each of whom topped the list of preliminary all-around results, tied at third overall with a pair of 28.725's through three events. Sklenar led the Golden Eagles on the vault with an even 9.600, followed by Eck's fifth-place 9.650 on the uneven bars and Castellaneta's 9.625 and 9.650 performances on the beam and floor.
Following this weekend's contest, the Golden Eagles only have three regular season meet's left before traveling to Springfield College for the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) East Regional Competition.
