BROCKPORT, N.Y. – SUNY Brockport's women's gymnastics team is set to take on the Division I Yale Bulldogs in New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday, February 9th at 1 p.m. The No. 1 Nationally ranked Golden Eagles are looking to pick up their sixth win of the season to remain undefeated. After this past weekend's win over the Ithaca Bombers, the Golden Eagles have amassed five dual wins. Prior to meeting with the Bombers, the Golden Eagles competed at Division I Southern Connecticut State, where they finished third overall.
Bomber Dual: The Green and Gold picked up their second win of the season against the Bombers last weekend. Brockport saw a number of standout individual performances, leading them to a strong finish with a score of 187.975 to Ithaca's 185.700.
Leading the Golden Eagles on the floor exercise was freshman Kyra Figurelli who placed first overall with a score of 9.700. Figurelli not only grabbed the top finish of the afternoon but also recorded a career-best. Lexi Castellaneta finished just behind the freshman with a score of 9.675 and is tied for third nationally with an average score of 9.650.
Brockport's most dominant finish of the day came on the balance beam where they secured four of the top five scores. Leading the way on the beam was sophomore Jensen Todd who posted the second first-place finish for the Green and Gold with a score of 9.625. The next top score for the Golden Eagles was Jamie Sklenar with a second-place score of 9.450, followed by Emmie White in fourth with a score of 9.325 and Castellaneta tied for fifth with a score of 9.200. With her first-place finish, Todd is now ranked 13th nationally on the balance beam with a season average of 9.430.
Sklenar and Amy Eck were the solo finishers for the Green and Gold on the vault; Sklenar placing second with a score of 9.575 and Eck a fifth-place finish with a score of 9.350.
Eck closed out the day with another second-place finish on the uneven bars with a score of 9.500 while Gabi Gare placed third with a score of 9.475. Eck is ranked sixth nationally with a season average of 9.455 in the event.
6 In A Row: The Green and Gold look to stay undefeated and come out with a win over the Bulldogs. The last time these two teams met was Jan. 22, 2012. The Golden Eagles fell short against the Bulldogs with a total score of 186.475 to the Bulldogs 189.475. Coincidentally, the last meeting happened in the same season that the Golden Eagles secured their first National Championship. The Bulldogs are coming off a season best performance on February 1st with a team score of 194.150 at the Don Tory Invitational vs Bridgeport.
Yale's junior Alyssa Firth led the day overall, earning the top spot on the vault for the Bulldogs with a score of 9.775. The floor exercise however proved to be the Bulldogs strongest event with a cumulative score of 48.925. Jade Buford finished the event with a season-best performance, marked at 9.775.
Whats Next: The Golden Eagles are set to take on the Cornel Big Red on Sunday, Feb. 16th at 1 p.m. for the second time this season. This will be the first dual meet the two have competed in since February 9, 2019 where the Golden Eagles fell 192.575 to the Big Red's 194.000.
