NEW HAVEN, CT – The SUNY Brockport women's gymnastics team found a tough competitor in DI Yale University Sunday afternoon as they fell to the Bulldogs 194.175-188.750. Despite picking up their first dual loss of the season, the Golden Eagles recorded their second highest team score, right behind their 189.500 best on senior day.
Highlights: The Green and Gold went head to head with a powerhouse Yale squad that was coming off a season best performance against Bridgeport and SCSU the weekend prior, only to set the bar even higher Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles held their own against the Bulldogs, posting a number of strong individual routines across the board. The team was led by
Lexi Castellaneta and
Jamie Sklenar, each of whom topped the list of preliminary all-around results, tied at third overall with a pair of 28.725's through three events.
Vault – Brockport nailed their second strongest team score of the day with a 47.275. Sklenar posted the top score for the Golden Eagles marked at a 9.600 even. Sklenar was followed closely by teammate
Amy Eck who finished just behind her at 9.500. Castellaneta and
Dorothy Wernick rounded out the scoring on the vault with a pair of 9.450's.
Bars – The Golden Eagles then rotated to the uneven bars where Eck and
Kim Musall led the way. Eck grabbed fifth-place with a strong 9.650 followed by Musall in sixth with a score of 9.500.
Courtney Kamberalis and
Nikki Jackson cracked the top ten as well, Kamberalis marked at 9.475 and Jackson at a 9.375.
Beam – The beam proved to be the Green and Gold's weakest outing of the day, however the event brought some of the best individual finishes. Castellaneta grabbed her second top finish of the day with a fifth-place score of 9.625. Sklenar and
Emmie White then followed suit in sixth and seventh place with scores of 9.550 and 9.375 respectively.
Shelby Schumaker closed out the top ten of the event with a ninth-place finish of 9.225.
Floor – Brockport led the way on the floor exercise with their highest team score of the day, 47.475. Castellaneta rounded out a successful day with another fifth-place finish on the floor with a score of 9.650. Sklenar,
Gina Ferdinandi, Musall and Kamberalis then secured the seventh through ten seed – Sklenar topping the group with a 9.575, followed by a pair of 9.425's from Ferdinandi and Musall and wrapped up by Kamberalis with an even 9.400.
The Golden Eagles will face the Cornell Big Red for the second time this year in a dual meet next Sunday, Feb. 16th at 1 p.m.
