Big Weekend Ahead for Volleyball at Messiah College Tournament

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport volleyball team is on the road this weekend to compete at the Messiah Tournament, hosted by Messiah College in Grantham, PA. The action gets started on Friday with a 5 pm matchup against the University of Mary Washington

Saturday's Matchups: The Golden Eagles will also play on Saturday, as they have two matches scheduled to close out the weekend. They take on the host team in Messiah College at 10 am on day two of the tournament. The final match of the slate will be at 2 pm against #11 Juniata College.

Last Time Out: Brockport snapped a seven-match win streak in its last outing, taking a loss against Geneseo. It was the opening of SUNYAC play, making the team's record 8-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Knights took the win at home, 3-2, as the match took all five sets to decide a winner. Brockport won sets 1 and 3, but came up short in the fifth set with a 15-13 score.

Tournament Play: This will be the third tournament/invitational the Green and Gold has participated at this season. At the Mount Union Tournament early in the season the squad went 2-1 for the weekend with wins against Baldwin Wallace and Carnegie Mellon. Brockport then swept the weekend slate at its own Golden Eagle Invitational, going 4-0 against the field.

Hard Hitters: Andrea Coyle ranks fourth in the SUNYAC currently with 110 kills, averaging the third highest kills per set rate of 3.33. Megan Loomis owns the fifth highest kills per set mark of 2.93 and ranks eighth in the conference with 85 kills. Megan Mastro is also top ten in the SUNYAC with 88 kills and 2.38 kills per set.

Helping Hands: Kerri McHale is currently leading the team with 238 assists from her setter role, which ranks fourth in the SUNYAC. Her mark of 6.80 assists per set is the third best in the conference. Ashley Allen is also top ten with an assists per set rate of 4.34 and is 11th in the league with 126 total assists.

Above the Net: The middle blockers, Meaghan Mastro and Myah Frostclapp, have protected the center of the net all season. Mastro is tied for the top spot in the SUNYAC with 15 solo blocks. She also has 13 block assists to earn a tally of 28 total blocks. Frostclapp is second on the squad with 23 total blocks, coming from a team-high 16 block assists and seven solos.

Staying Ready:  Brockport's libero, Madalyn Bowen has been great defensively with the third highest dig total in the SUNYAC. She has totaled 175 digs to earn a 4.73 digs per set rate which is second in the conference. With 20 digs last outing, Bowen has at least 10 digs in nine of the team's ten matches this season. Andrea Coyle and Ellen Paddock both own digs per set marks above 2.00, while Shelby Budnick and Kerri McHale are just below the 2.00 rate.

Mary Washington: The University of Mary Washington has been solid all season, as the team owns an 11-3 record overall. The Eagles are currently on a nine-match win streak after defeating Gallaudet, 3-1, in their last outing. Brockport and Mary Washington will face off in a neutral site contest this weekend. Brockport is currently 2-0 in a neutral setting compared to a 3-2 mark from Mary Washington.

Messiah College: As the host school for the tournament this weekend, Messiah College looks to bounce back from losing its last two matches. Most recently the Falcons have lost to Neumann and York which pushed their record to 7-5 overall. The squad currently 2-1 at home and hopes to take advantage of playing on its home court this weekend. The Green and Gold has yet to win a match on the road in 2021, holding an 0-2 record in away contests.

#11 Juniata College: The No. 11 nationally ranked Juniata Eagles look to continue their seven-match win streak this weekend at the Messiah Tournament. This team is 8-1 overall this season, with its only loss coming to the No. 1 nationally ranked squad from Johns Hopkins. The Eagles have earned five straight 3-0 sweeps heading into the weekend. Facing off against Juniata will be a great test for the Brockport squad before jumping into the thick of SUNYAC play.

Up Next: The Golden Eagles are back on the road next week for a pair of conference matchups. They take on Cortland at 6 pm on Friday, October 1st before heading over to face Oswego at 1 pm on Saturday.
