Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's ice hockey team will look to return to action this weekend as they will host Stevenson University on Saturday, January 8
th at 4 p.m. in the Tuttle North Ice Arena.
First Half Highlights: Returning to the ice for the first game of the new year, the Golden Eagles will enter with an 8-5 overall and 5-3 SUNYAC record. The team is currently ranked fourth in the SUNYAC standings with 15 points and sits behind #2 Geneseo, Cortland and Plattsburgh.
To recap the first half of the season, Brockport started off strong recording five consecutive wins to start out the season. the five-game win streak tied a 41-year-old program record set back in 1980 for the most consecutive wins to start out a season.
A few of the teams most memorable victories during the first half came against King's College, Neumann University, Plattsburgh and Buffalo State. Against King's, the Golden Eagles record three unanswered goals in the third period to pick up a 3-2 come from behind win. The following night at Neumann, Brockport picked up its first shutout of the season behind goalkeeper
Nolan Egbert in his first career start in a Golden Eagles uniform. One of the Golden Eagle's more dominant performances from the first half of the season was when the team managed to gain redemption against Plattsburgh. The Cardinals eliminated Brockport from the SUNYAC playoffs back in 2019-2020, as the Green and Gold picked up a 7-3 win over the Cardinals this time around.
Conference Awards: From around the conference, four different Golden Eagles managed to earn a spot as a Prestosports Athletes of the Week. Having earned the Goaltender of the Week Award three times during the first half of the season, senior transfer
Nolan Egbert (7-3-0) has made an impact for the Golden Eagles. He currently ranks second amongst netminders in the conference in wins (7), save percentage (.940%), goals against (17) and goals against average (1.72%) while recording two shutout victories against Neumann and Potsdam.
Senior defensemen and captain
Ryan Romeo is amongst conference leaders so far this season in all offensive scoring categories which has earned him the Prestosports Men's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week honors twice in the first half of the season. As a defenseman, Romeo's scoring production has been phenomenal. He leads the conference between both forwards and defensemen in points (21) and assists (14) while leading all defensemen and tying all skaters for a spot at fifth place in goals (7) alongside teammate
Jacob King. Romeo's presence when on the ice has also managed to put him in third place amongst all skaters in the plus/minus category with a +15.
New commers to the program
Andrew Harley and
Connor Galloway each managed to take home the Prestosports Rookie of the Week honors once this season. Harley's honors came when the team faced off against Potsdam and Plattsburgh over a SUNYAC weekend. At the time Harley was the team's leader in points and finished the weekend with a total of five points with two goals and three assists in two games. Galloway picked up his ROTW award by recording his first collegiate hat-trick in the team's 7-1 victory over Chatham University in the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational. Against the Cougars, Galloway tallied three points on three goals while picking up a plus/minus of +4. Harley and Galloway are currently tied for 15th in the conference in goals with each having scored five. Harley is currently tied for third in the Conference in points having recorded a total of 15, while also being tied for second place In assists amongst all skaters with 10.
Standout Skaters: Some other conference standouts for the Golden Eagles are
Jacob King,
Mitchell Parsons,
Anthony Hora and
Trevor Pray. Amongst Harley, King is tied for third in the conference in points (15) and tied for fifth in goals (7) in the SUNYAC.
Mitchell Parsons has had an impressive start to his season as well ranking amongst the top 10 in goals (6) while also tallying seven assists for a total of 13 points. Behind Romeo, Hora has been one of the team's top two-way defensemen. Recording nine points on eight assists and one goal, Hora is tied for fourth in the SUNYAC amongst defensemen in points, despite having played in just eight of 13 games.
Trevor Pray has recorded six goals this season tying him with Parsons for tenth in the conference along with picking up three assists for a total of nine points. Of Pray's six goals, he is ranked second in the conference in game winning goals (3).
Looking at Stevenson University: the Mustangs will enter the weekend with a (9-2-1) overall and (5-2) conference record. Prior to facing the Golden Eagles, Stevenson will have to go up against #2 SUNY Geneseo. Ryan Patrick is the Mustangs current team leader in points having recorded 16 points on six goals and a team high 10 assists. Leading Stevenson in goals is Frank Vitucci who's recorded seven goal and four assists for 11 points. Appearing in 11 games this season, goaltender Ryan Kenny has been their work horse in net allowing 24 goals and making 316 saves for a save percentage of .929% and goals against average of 2.17%. He enters the weekend with a record of (9-1-1) while Marko Sturma who's appeared in one game this season has allowed four goals on 15 saves.
Whats Ahead: Following Saturday evenings contest, Brockport will make up its postponed game against Lebanon Valley College which was originally scheduled for January 6
th will now take place on Saturday, January 15
