Brockport, NY – Currently sitting at 6-8 overall and 2-0 in SUNYAC play, the Golden Eagle volleyball team hits the road this weekend for a pair of conference clashes. They face New Paltz on Friday at 6pm, before heading to Oneonta on Saturday at 1pm.
Starting Conference Play: Last weekend Brockport hosted both Plattsburgh and Potsdam to begin SUNYAC competition for the 2023 campaign. The slate opened up with a 3-1 victory for the Green and Gold against the Cardinals. The very next day, the visiting Potsdam Bears got swept, 3-0, by Brockport. The squad will put its undefeated mark of 2-0 in conference play on the line this weekend.
Weekly Award Winner: On Monday, the SUNYAC announced that
Jordan Thompson of the Brockport volleyball team would be selected as the SUNYAC Women's Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week. Thompson led the Golden Eagle attack this past weekend in wins over both Plattsburgh and Potsdam. She had 15 kills in a 3-1 win over the Cardinals to go with four aces while on the serve. The next day she had 12 more kills in a 3-0 sweep over Potsdam.
On the Attack: The Golden Eagles continue to look the way of
Jordan Thompson offensively. She has team-highs across the board in total attacks (537), kills (180), kills per set (3.46), points (205.0), and points per set (3.94).
Leah Vitiello,
Alenna Williamson, and
Alexis Sison each have 75 or more kills so far.
Elsie Logan (25 aces) and
Gianna Felipe (18 aces) have been the most successful with their serves at this point.
Defensive Work: Elsie Logan leads the team with 186 digs (3.72 digs/s) so far this year.
Jordan Thompson,
Gianna Felipe, and
Brooklyn Sullivan have all been in position for at least 100 digs for Brockport. All coming from block assists,
Jayda Pyle leads the team with 21 total blocks, while Thompson is close behind with 20.
Kaia Hubbard has a team-high of four solo blocks from her middle blocker spot.
Setting the Table: Kaitlyn Jewett has come on strong in her first year with the program, currently leading the team with 240 assists. The freshman is averaging 6.32 assists per set for the Green and Gold.
Ashley Allen totaled 215 assists from the setter position, averaging 5.81 per set.
New Paltz Matchup: New Paltz enters Friday night with a record of 12-5 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks picked up conference wins over Fredonia, 3-1, and Buffalo State, 3-0, last weekend. #18 Mackenzie Williams, #11 Jamie Albrecht, and #14 Letisha Perez make up the three attacking threats for New Paltz. All three players have 160 or more kills this season and are near the 3.0 kills per set mark. Brockport defeated the Hawks, 3-2, in the regular season and, 3-1, in the SUNYAC Semifinals last year.
Looking at Oneonta: Going into the weekend the Oneonta Red Dragons hold a record of 2-11 overall and are 0-2 against SUNYAC opponents. Last weekend they were swept by Buffalo State, 3-0, and then fell to Fredonia, 3-1. #12 Ashanti Davis leads the team with 130.5 points on the season and is averaging 1.96 kills per set. Brockport has swept Oneonta two years in a row in the regular season, and has won seven of the last eight meetings.
Up Next: Following the weekend road trip, the Golden Eagles will be back home on Friday, October 13
th for Senior Night. They will host Fredonia for a 6pm start to the match.
