Alumna Sheryl Charlton ’02 Added to Athletic Training Staff

SUNY Brockport Director of Athletics Erick Hart announced the hiring of Sheryl Charlton '02 as an athletic trainer on Monday.  Charlton will provide coverage for the Brockport athletic training clinic, home practices and contests, away contests as assigned, and supervision of athletic training students. Other duties include injury prevention, evaluation, management, and treatment of student-athlete injuries as well as short-term and long-term rehabilitation. Her primary sport coverage will include men's soccer, men's & women's basketball and men's lacrosse.

"As a graduate of Brockport, I am extremely grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the Golden Eagle family," said Charlton. "It's an honor to be able to give back to a program that helped me develop my passion for the profession.  I'd like to thank Erick Hart, Kathryn Stiner and the rest of the search committee for this opportunity."

Since graduating from SUNY Brockport in 2002, Charlton has worked as an athletic trainer at UR Medicine in the Sports Medicine branch (2010-2023).  Her responsibilities primarily included providing athletic training outreach to Fairport High School. She also evaluated and treated assigned patients in the clinical setting, while providing post-op guidance to patients at the Ambulatory Surgery Center.

She also spent nearly two years as a per diem athletic trainer at nearby St. John Fisher College where she assisted with training room and game coverage for multiple teams as needed while also working with coaches and full-time athletic trainers to ensure consistent care was provided for student-athletes.

Charlton spent nearly eight years at Amsterdam Memorial Healthcare (2002-2010) where she began as an athletic trainer before being promoted to athletic training program coordinator.  As program coordinator, she supervised and coordinated scheduling for one part-time and four per diem ATC's to ensure game coverage while also making sure contracts were met and allowing flexibility in scheduling for teams and staff. As an ATC she provided game coverage and injury care and prevention for the Amsterdam Mohawks Collegiate Baseball Club and Amsterdam Zephyrs Semi-Pro football team.

She holds various certifications, including National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification: ATC. She is also currently certified in American Red Cross: CPR/AED Professional Rescuer & Healthcare Provider as well as Personal Leadership Development within the Healthcare Environment.

She graduated from SUNY Brockport in 2002 with a degree in Physical Education and a concentration in athletic training. She also holds an associate degree in liberal arts from Jefferson Community College (1999). She currently resides in Irondequoit with her fiancé Rachel and their two dogs.
