BROCKPORT, N.Y. – SUNY Brockport proudly hosted the New York State Special Olympics Genesee Region MCPSAC School-Based Track & Field event on Thursday, May 28, at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium Complex. The event ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., welcoming hundreds of student-athletes from across the region for a day of competition, achievement, and community celebration.
Student-athletes representing local school districts—including Brockport, Hilton, Spencerport, and Gates Chili—competed in a variety of track and field events, demonstrating determination, sportsmanship, and school pride. The annual event continues to serve as a highlight of the spring season, bringing together athletes, coaches, volunteers, and families in an inclusive and supportive environment.
SUNY Brockport Athletics maintains a longstanding partnership with Special Olympics, regularly hosting major regional competitions such as the MCPSAC West Track and Field event and the Westside Special Olympics. This ongoing collaboration reflects the university's commitment to community engagement and inclusive athletics.
Brockport's connection to the Special Olympics movement is deeply rooted in its history. The university famously hosted the 1979 International Summer Special Olympics, welcoming more than 3,500 athletes from over 30 countries in a landmark global event that included appearances by notable figures such as Muhammad Ali. Today, that legacy continues through events like Thursday's competition.
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium Complex—named in honor of the founder of the Special Olympics—serves as a fitting venue for these events, symbolizing the enduring spirit of inclusion and opportunity. Additional campus landmarks, including the "Joy" fountain, further reflect Brockport's dedication to celebrating the abilities and achievements of all individuals.
SUNY Brockport Athletics has also earned national recognition for its efforts, receiving top honors in the Special Olympics Activity Category from the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA).
Through events like the Genesee Region School-Based Track & Field meet, SUNY Brockport continues to uphold its proud tradition of supporting the Special Olympics and fostering meaningful experiences for student-athletes across Western New York.
