Brockport, NY – This weekend the SUNY Brockport men's basketball team is on the road for a SUNYAC battle against Geneseo. Tip-off is set for 4pm on Saturday, January 20
th.
Last Time Out: Earlier in the week the Golden Eagles hosted Fredonia, as they pulled out a tight, 77-73, victory. Brockport traded blows with Fredonia for most of the first half. The visiting Blue Devils would trail by five points, 34-29, heading into halftime. Brockport expanded its lead to double-digits in the second half, but Fredonia went on a late run to close the gap. It was a 3-point game heading into the final minute of play, but the Green and Gold held off its conference foe on the home court. Brockport improved to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in the SUNYAC.
Series of Close Contests: This season has seen a lot of close calls for the Golden Eagles on the hardwood. They have played in seven games already that have either gone to overtime or was a one-possession game. The squad is 6-1 in these close games, with the one loss coming against Plattsburgh on the road, 73-72. Brockport has pulled out overtime wins against Cortland (80-72) and Buffalo State (79-75). Experience in close games will benefit the team in the long run when the postseason comes around.
Stepping Up: The squad has received valuable play from the bench this season, including in the recent win over Fredonia. In that game,
Zachary Rice and
Tyler Cowie both came up big off the bench. Rice had 16 points, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-5 from downtown. Cowie went 7-for-10 in the game, totaling 15 points. Despite cooling off in the last two outings,
Alex Tavarez has made an impact off the bench as well. Averaging 9.3 points a game he went on a seven-game stretch with double-digits, including an eruption for 30 points against Cortland.
Arnold Heating Up: After a season-low of six points against Plattsburgh,
Tony Arnold has turned it around quickly with his two best scoring outputs of the season. Brockport's leading scorer (13.9 ppg) went off for 27 points (11-17 FG, 5-7 3PT) in a win over Potsdam. The next game Arnold finished with 23 points (9-11 FT) to lead the offense. He continues to run the show offensively as the leader in assists (48) and is still making plays on defense with a team-high in steals (27).
The Geneseo Knights: Geneseo is entering the weekend matchup with an overall record of 7-8 to go with a 4-4 conference mark. The team most recently took down Buffalo State at home, 72-60, improving the home record to 6-1 on the season. The Knights are scoring 72.6 points per game on the year, to go with shooting splits of 43.6/29.0/64.7. #23 Cole Kattan leads the team in scoring (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg). #25 Sebastian Pacheco (13.2 ppg) and #2 Josh Garelle (13.2 ppg) also average double digits in the scoring column. Brockport and Geneseo have split the regular season matchups, 2-2, in the last two seasons.
