Men's Basketball Holds Strong at Home for Win Over Potsdam

Brockport, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's basketball team extended its win streak to five on Friday night. In a tight game on the home floor, the Golden Eagles defeated Potsdam, 83-74. Brockport is now 12-5 overall and owns an 8-3 record in conference play.

Three double-digit scorers off the bench made a crucial impact in the game for the Green and Gold. Alex Tavarez led the squad with 18 points (6-12 FG, 6-6 FT), while Milo Scheve added 11 points (4-4 FG) and six boards. Zachary Rice finished with 10 points, including a highlight reel dunk in the first half.

Caquan Wester posted 17 points (7-13 FG) and six rebounds in the contest. Tony Arnold chipped in all over with nine points, six boards, four assists, and three steals while not committing a single turnover.

Brockport's full-team effort combatted a 26-point outing from Potsdam's Colton Huestis (8-14 FG, 5-8 3PT). Huestis led all scorers on the night, while teammate Kawar Singh grabbed a game-high 16 boards for the Bears.

Neither team would give an inch in the first half of play. The largest lead of the opening half was a 5-point advantage for Potsdam. In this SUNYAC conference clash, the two teams saw a tie score on the board eight different times before halftime. Brockport snuck into the break with a 34-33 lead.

Potsdam started the second half quickly with a pair of makes from long range to take a slim lead. By the 12:47 mark, Brockport had tied the score up once again at 53-53. Going back-and-forth, the score stayed tied at 68-68 with just five minutes to play.

Tavarez would score seven straight points for the Green and Gold to help create some separation on the scoreboard in crunchtime. While the Bears fought to keep it a one-possesion game, Arnold and Tavarez would put the game away.

In the final minute of play, Tony Arnold hit a clutch jumper to put the Golden Eagles up by seven at 79-72. Looking to extend the game, Potsdam played the foul game in the final moments. However, Alex Tavarez would hit four foul shots in a row to close out the contest.

The Golden Eagles are back at home again on Saturday for another SUNYAC matchup. This time around they will play host to Plattsburgh for a 4pm tip-off.
