No. 3 Brockport to Host No. 6 Oneonta in 1st Round of SUNYAC Tournament

Brockport, NY – As the No. 3 seed for the SUNYAC Tournament, the SUNY Brockport men's basketball team will host No. 6 Oneonta for the 1st Round. Tip-off for the postseason contest is scheduled for 7:30pm at The Vlog.

Last Time Out: Brockport pulled out a close contest against Geneseo, 68-65, at home to close out the regular season. With the win the Golden Eagles moved to 16-8 overall and 12-6 in the conference, clinching the No. 3 seed for the postseason. After facing a slight deficit at halftime, Brockport was able to climb back into the game in the second half. Brockport would finish the contest with a 20-9 advantage on turnovers, scoring 30 points off Geneseo's miscues. Head Coach Joe Clarke gets to the postseason in his first year at the helm, as the program goes to the conference tournament for a 23rd year in a row.
 
SUNYAC Bracket: The first round of the SUNYAC Tournament is set to be played on Tuesday night. No. 4 Cortland will host No. 5 Plattsburgh, while No. 3 Brockport hosts No. 6 Oneonta to get the postseason started. No. 1 Oswego and No. 2 New Paltz await the results of the first round to determine their opponents for the Semifinals on Friday, February 23rd. The SUNYAC Semifinals and Finals will be hosted by top-seeded Oswego this weekend.
 
Recent Postseason History: It is now 23 consecutive seasons that the Golden Eagles will be competing in the conference tournament. They are looking to snag the program's 10th ever SUNYAC title, and the first since the 2019-20 season. Last season Brockport earned a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed and defeated Cortland, 65-53, in the Semifinals. The journey came to an end in the SUNYAC Finals, as Oswego claimed the trophy with a 74-63 win. The Lakers are looking to win a third straight SUNYAC Championship this year.
 
Team Leaders: Tony Arnold (12.5ppg), Caquan Wester (10.3ppg), and Alex Tavarez (10.3ppg) are the three leading scorers for the Green and Gold this season. Wester has also been the team's top rebounder, snagging 7.9 boards a game. Arnold makes plays on both ends of the floor, totaling team-highs of 78 assists and 47 steals.
 
Shooting-wise, Zachary Rice's 30 made 3-pointers leads the team. He also is shooting 76.2% at the foul line for first on the squad. Wester has 22 makes from long range, while Nathaniel Gordon has 19 3-pointers on 51.4% shooting from deep. Danny Ashley has also been solid with more steals than fouls (41-40) and more assists than turnovers (53-24).
 
Against Oneonta: The Golden Eagles have already bested Oneonta twice this season. They won at home by a final score of 87-76, before taking the victory on the road, 94-81, in the second matchup. Caquan Wester posted a double-double in both games against the Red Dragons in the regular season. Oneonta earned the sixth seed for the postseason with a 12-13 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the SUNYAC. Elijah Castillo (14.7ppg) and Xavier Hill (13.5ppg, 8.5rpg) lead the way for the Red Dragons this season. The last time these teams met in the postseason, Oneonta eliminated Brockport in the 2022 Semifinals, 64-54.
 
What's at Stake: It is a win or go home scenario in the postseason, as the losing team will have its season come to an end. The winner of Tuesday night's game will advance to the SUNYAC Semifinals on Friday, hosted by Oswego.
