Golden Eagles Travel for Pair of Key E8 Battles

Brockport, NY – This weekend the SUNY Brockport men's basketball team will be on the road for a key pair of Empire 8 contests. Hoping to remain atop the conference standings, the Golden Eagles will face Alfred on Friday night at 7:30pm and Houghton on Saturday at 4pm.

7 in a Row: Brockport is heating up at the right time, winning seven straight as the regular season starts to wind down. To go along with the impressive string of wins, the squad has won 10 of its last 11 games. After a 1-6 start through a tough non-conference slate, the Green and Gold has jumped to 14-8 overall and 12-1 in the Empire 8. Brockport currently sits at first in the E8 standings and has already clinched a postseason berth.

Last Time Out: The Golden Eagles defended home court on Senior Day last Saturday with a 96-80 win over St. John Fisher. They benefitted from some strong performances across the board. Tony Arnold stood out for SUNY Brockport with a versatile performance, recording 11 points, 7 assists, and 4 steals in their latest game.

Mekhi Beckett also made a significant impact, leading the team with 14 points, including 3 three-pointers, and contributing 6 assists. Alex Tavarez added to the scoring effort with 15 points on efficient shooting, making 6 of 8 basket attempts, and also recorded 2 steals.

Adewale Fasanmi was a defensive presence, blocking 2 shots and grabbing 7 rebounds. Zachary Rice showcased his shooting accuracy from beyond the arc, hitting 4 of 7 3-pointer attempts to accumulate a total of 12 points.

Beckett Heating Up: Over the last six games, Mekhi Beckett has made at least three shots from long range in each game and is shooting lights out (52.2% FG & 51.2% 3PT). On Monday, the Empire 8 announced that Mekhi Beckett was chosen as the Men's Basketball Co-Player of the Week.

Beckett averaged 17.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in a pair of key E8 victories for Brockport over the weekend that gives them a two-game lead in the race for regular season title and No. 1 overall seed.

Over the last four games, Beckett has been on fire offensively for Brockport, averaging 18.0 points per game. In that span he has scored 20+ points twice, while shooting 51.1% from the field (24-47) and 50% from 3-point territory (16-32).

Team Leaders: Beckett currently leads a trio of double-digit scorer on the squad with 13.1 points per game. Zachary Rice averages 10.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, shooting 40.6% from deep with 52 made 3-pointers (team-high). Tony Arnold is scoring 10.5 points a game as the third double-digit threat. Arnold also leads the Golden Eagles with 5.9 rebounds per game, 3.6 assists per game, and 2.2 steals per game (Tied with Jakhi Lucas).

Weekend's Slate: The Alfred University Saxons will host the Friday night matchup hoping to bounce back after a recent loss to Elmira, 78-75. The Saxons are at the .500 mark on the season at 11-11 overall with a 7-6 record in E8 play. They are slated for two home games this weekend at the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena, where they hold a 7-4 record on the season.

Up next on Saturday the Golden Eagles will move on over to Houghton University to face the Highlanders for another E8 tilt. The Highlanders enter the weekend at 12-10 overall and 7-6 in the conference, as they host Geneseo on Friday night. Houghton is coming off a tough road loss to Keuka, 69-47.

Brockport defeated Alfred, 85-53, and Houghton, 88-76, earlier this season.

Regular Season Finale: On Tuesday, February 18th the Golden Eagles will host Geneseo for the final game of the regular season at 7:30pm. It is also the annual Play 4 Kay Cancer Awareness Game for both the women and men's basketball teams.
