BROCKPORT, NY – After a challenging stretch, the SUNY Brockport men's basketball team is packing their bags for a pivotal pair of Empire 8 contests. The Golden Eagles will spend the weekend on the road, beginning with a trip to Houghton, NY, on Friday, January 23rd, to face Houghton University at 7:30 p.m. The road swing continues the following day in Alfred, NY, for a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Alfred University Saxons at 4 p.m.
In the Rearview
The Golden Eagles (5-10, 1-5 E8) are looking to reset after a setback at SUNY Poly this past Saturday. Despite the final score, Brockport found a significant offensive rhythm in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 41-38 over the final 20 minutes. The Green and Gold showed resilience on the offensive end, improving their shooting to 44.12% in the second frame while getting a massive 42 points of production from the bench.
Ajani Flemming anchored the second-unit production, leading the squad with 12 points on a sharp 4-of-6 performance from beyond the arc.
Miles Johnson orchestrated the offense with a team-high four assists, highlighted by a perfectly placed lob to
Cameron Pownall for an emphatic second-half dunk.
Christian Amica added a vital offensive lift with eight points, including a 5-of-6 showing at the charity stripe, while
Bryce Marshall and
Jacob Oka provided a consistent presence in the interior. Brockport will look to carry that late-game momentum into this weekend's double-header.
Battle in Houghton
Brockport heads to Houghton University boasting a perfect 2-0 all-time record against the Highlanders, with both victories coming last season. This matchup includes a memory of a thrilling 107-105 overtime victory on the road last February. Houghton currently stands at 4-11 overall with a 1-5 mark in Empire 8 play. The Highlanders enter Friday's clash having recently snapped a seven-game losing streak, coming off a narrow 75-73 victory over Hartwick. The Golden Eagles will look to neutralize Houghton's momentum early to secure their first conference road win of the month.
Saxon Showdown
On Saturday, the road trip moves to Alfred, NY, for a matchup against an Alfred University squad that currently sits at 3-12 overall and 0-6 in Empire 8 competition. The Saxons are coming off an 83-64 loss to Russell Sage and will be eager to defend their home court. Brockport holds a 4-3 all-time advantage over Alfred, having claimed victory in two of the last three meetings, including a dominant 85-53 win last January. Maintaining defensive discipline and controlling the glass will be key as the Golden Eagles look to finish the weekend sweep.
Up Next: Following the long five-game road stretch, the Golden Eagles will finally return to The Vlog. Brockport will host SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, January 27th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
