Brockport SAAC Visits Local Elementary School for Annual Read Program

On Friday, March 27, the SUNY Brockport Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) partnered with librarians from Drake Memorial Library to bring energy, excitement, and inspiration to Helen Barrett Montgomery School No. 50 for the annual READ Program.

A spirited group of Golden Eagle student-athletes—joined by their beloved mascot, Ellsworth—spent the morning engaging with students in meaningful and memorable ways. From leading fun physical education activities to reading aloud in classrooms, the athletes connected with the children while promoting both literacy and active living. Each student also received a goodie bag and a donated book, courtesy of Drake Memorial Library.

Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Drake Library, every child received a sling bag filled with useful and fun items, including pencils, pens, a small notepad, a composition notebook, toothpaste, a toothbrush, and a box of crayons.

In total, Brockport student-athletes spent over an hour in the classroom with 50 first-grade students, followed by 40 minutes of outdoor fun. Together, they played games like basketball, football, hockey, and soccer—creating smiles, laughter, and lasting memories.

The READ Program continues to be a powerful way for SUNY Brockport student-athletes to connect with local youth, fostering a positive environment that blends learning, activity, and community spirit.

A heartfelt thank you to all of our student-athletes and staff for their time and dedication, and to Helen Barrett Montgomery School No. 50 for welcoming us so warmly!
