Sophomore Matt Ellis (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) won the 125-pound title at the 27th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the entire tournament over the weekend . For his efforts, Ellis has been named The College at Brockport Male Athlete of the Week.

Ellis also scored a major decision victory in his bout as Brockport defeated RIT 32-12 in a dual match during the week. At the John Summa Tournament, Ellis opened the tournament with a 10-5 decision over the 125-pounder from Wayneburg and then posted a convincing 16-7 major decision victory over RIT’s Mike Nguyen who Ellis defeated earlier in the week – also with a major decision – in the dual between the two teams. In the championship bout, Ellis won a 6-4 sudden victory decision over top-seeded Jesse Gunter from Baldwin Wallace.

The coaches from the teams entered in the tournament voted Ellis the top wrestler of the entire tournament.

The victory for Ellis helped the Golden Eagles post its 16th team tournament title in the last 17 years of the annual memorial tournament.

Brockport competes next at the Edinboro Invitational Tournament Saturday, February 9.
