The College at Brockport's women's basketball team held an early lead against the Oswego Lakers, but Oswego used a 14-0 first-half run to pull away and win 75-61 Saturday afternoon inside Brockport's Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
Freshman
Alex Leung (Merrick, NY/W.C. Mepham) scored a career-high 14 points and added four assists while sophomore
Sarah Alwardt (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles (4-11 overall, 2-6 SUNYAC). It was Alwardt's second double-double of the year.
"Our players did a great job of coming out in the second half ready to play and we need to make sure that everyone's ready to play for 40 minutes, every game," said
Nicole Beauregard, Brockport's third-year head coach.
"
Alex Leung playing the point guard is doing a great job as a freshman , and she played all 20 minutes in the second half.
Sarah Alwardt is giving us a spark rebounding and on defense. If we can get all of our players on the same page for 40 minutes, we're going to see the improvements that we've been working hard for."
Junior
Desiree Fauvelle (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) drained her only three-pointer of the first half to stake Brockport to an early, 8-7 lead. With the score tied at 10, Oswego went on 14-0 run to seize control with a 24-20 lead. The Laker run was snapped when junior
Liz Unger (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton) hit a jumper with 9:16 remaining in the half.
Alwardt and sophomore
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) combined for 11 of Brockport's 23 first-half points.
The Golden Eagles came out hot in the second, as Story, Alwardt and junior
Rachel Csakany (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) each hit baskets during a 6-0 run. Brockport sliced the deficit to 11, 40-29, before Oswego responded with a flurry of three-pointers. The Lakers (7-8 overall, 4-4 SUNYAC) hit on 7 of their first 12 three-pointers against the Golden Eagles.
Leung hit a '3' halfway through the half to pull Brockport within 10, 55-45, but the Golden Eagles would draw no closer.
Brockport outscored Oswego 38-35 in the second half, and outshot Oswego (45.7 percent to 34.4 percent).
The Golden Eagles return to action Tuesday night against Buffalo State (8-6, 3-5 SUNYAC).
