BOXSCORE
Junior
Lauren Drago (Scottsville, NY/Wheatland-Chili) picked up a loose ball after a corner kick dropped in front of the goal and then she scored the tying goal for The College at Brockport Women's Soccer team in the quarterfinal game of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament Saturday afternoon in Fredonia. Less than two minutes after Drago's tying goal, Fredonia scored on a penalty kick to take a 2-1 lead and went on to win advancing to the SUNYAC Tournament semifinal.
Brockport, the sixth seed in the tournament, was eliminated from the SUNYAC Tournament with the loss and now awaits a postseason bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament.
Fredonia (12-7-0), seeded No. 3 in the tournament, opened the scoring late in the first half with a header past Brockport's
Erin Asquith (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) for the 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second half, junior
Kaila Maguire (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam) moved the ball into the corner of the field and made a move to the goal before the ball was deflected over the end line setting up a Brockport corner kick.
Junior
Sarah Lawson (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca East) lofted the corner kick into front of the goal and after a scramble for the ball, Drago tapped the ball into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1.
Less than two minutes later a foul called on the edge of the Brockport 18-yard box gave the Blue Devils a penalty kick and Reilly Condidorio used a low shot to the right of Asquith for the 2-1 lead.
“We certainly proved that we deserved to be here at the SUNYAC Tournament,” said head coach
Joan Schockow after the Golden Eagles needed to win its final two regular-season conference games to get into the six-team field. “We played very hard and I was impressed with the way we fought hard all day. We just didn't come out on top today.”
Late in the second half, Brockport had a good chance to tie the score when senior
Chelcie Gramza (Akron, NY/Akron) fired a shot from 10 yards out but the shot just missed the net.
Asquith finished with eight saves.
