Rachel Csakany (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) and The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team made a furious comeback against Potsdam, but fell short in the final seconds, dropping the State University of New York Athletic Conference contest 58-56 Friday night. The Golden Eagles trailed by as much as 15 in the second half before storming back.
Csakany nearly reached a double-double, scoring nine points and collecting a season-high 12 rebounds. Csakany grabbed two crucial offensive rebounds that set up potential game-tying shots with under 15 seconds to play.
Brockport jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead over the Bears. The game remained close for the first 10 minutes until Potsdam grabbed control of the lead, taking a 24-12 advantage with four minutes to play in the first half. Potsdam went into halftime with an eight point lead, 30-22.
Csakany, who went scoreless in the first half, helped fuel a Brockport comeback in the second half. Csakany hit a layup at the 12:41 mark for her first points of the game and brought the Golden Eagles to within eight. Csakany scored eight points in a five minute stretch, including a layup that brought Brockport to within two, 39-37.
Potsdam slowly built up their lead to nine points, only to see Brockport fight their way back.
Kelly Grinnell (Auburn, NY/Auburn) sunk a critical three-point shot with 4:59 to play to bring the score to 50-47 in favor of Potsdam. A
LaDonya Rolle (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) free throw and a layup by
Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) knotted the game at 50 aside with just over three minutes remaining.
Trailing 57-52, Grinnell came up clutch again, sinking another three-point attempt with 47 seconds remaining. After a missed Potsdam jumper, Brockport came charging down the court. Story missed a jumper, but Csakany grabbed the offensive rebound and kicked it out to
Erica Johnson (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) for a three-point shot. Her attempt rimmed out, but Csakany grabbed another offensive rebound. Csakany was fouled and went to the line for two shots.
Csakany missed the first free-throw but sank the second. On the ensuing inbounds, Potsdam guard Hanna Kmiecinski was fouled and made one of two free throw shots with eight seconds to play. Brockport came down the court where Johnson had a chance at the buzzer, but her shot was too strong.
Johnson and Story both finished with 12 points for Brockport, who had their highest output of points in their last five games. Brockport outrebounded the Bears 39-29 and outshot the Bears 39.1 percent to 37.5 percent.
