BOXSCORE

Sophomore Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) scored 14 points and sophomore Sarah Alwardt (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) added nine points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but The College at Brockport's women's basketball team fell to Fredonia 73-66 Tuesday night inside the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.

Freshman Alex Leung (Merrick, NY/W.C. Mepham) scored eight first-half points and freshman Kristin Wegrzyn (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) added six in the half for the Golden Eagles (4-14 overall, 2-9 SUNYAC).

Brockport started fast as Leung hit a pair of three-pointers, Story and Alwardt each hit layups and junior Rachel Csakany (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) made a free throw as the Golden Eagles built an 11-0 lead over the first 3:36.

Fredonia (5-13, 3-9 SUNYAC) closed the gap to 20-11 before Brockport went on an 8-0 run, capped by a jumper from Leung, which gave Brockport its largest lead of the game, 28-11 with 7:06 remaining in the half.

The Golden Eagles made 12 of their 27 shots from the field in the first half (44 percent) and took a 33-26 lead into halftime.

Fredonia scored the first six points in the second half, and took its first lead of the game, 44-43 with 13:19 remaining. The Blue Devils pushed their advantage to 53-48 before Wegrzyn connected on one of her three '3s' to pull Brockport within one, 53-52. Fredonia answered back and used a 10-1 run to pull away for good.

Story made a '3' with 21 seconds left that trimmed the deficit to 71-66, and Fredonia turned the ball over on its next possession, but Brockport committed a turnover and Fredonia made a pair of free throws late to seal the win.

The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend, hosting Plattsburgh at 6 p.m. Friday night, followed by a 2 p.m. tipoff against Potsdam on Saturday. Both games take place inside the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium.
