The College at Brockport's women's basketball team limited New Paltz to 28 percent shooting, but Brockport still fell 51-42 on the road Friday night.
Brockport (6-15 overall, 4-10 SUNYAC) was trying to become the first visiting SUNYAC school to knock off the Hawks (13-9, 11-4) during the 2010-11 season.
Despite the loss, Brockport remains in seventh place in the SUNYAC standings, half a game ahead of Fredonia (4-11) and a full game up on Plattsburgh (3-11). The top eight teams qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.
Freshman Alex Leung (Merrick, NY/W.C. Mepham) and junior Desiree Fauvelle (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) each scored nine points while sophomore Sarah Alwardt (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) grabbed 10 rebounds with three assists and three blocks for Brockport, which was going for its first three-game winning streak of the season.
Leung, Fauvelle and sophomore Ellen Story (Catskill, NY/Catskill) each made baskets as Brockport took an early 8-7 lead, before New Paltz put together a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead.
The teams traded baskets before senior Kristin Abbott (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) hit a jumper as the Golden Eagles took the lead, 16-14. Abbott's bucket was part of a 21-11 run.
Abbott scored six points, Alwardt, Fauvelle and junior Rachel Csakany (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) added four points apiece while Leung drained a 3-point shot during the spurt that saw Brockport take a 29-23 lead into halftime.
New Paltz answered by scoring the first nine points of the second half, and led 32-29 when Zoe Cohen buried a three-pointer with 13:40 remaining. The Hawks' lead swelled to 10, 44-34, before Brockport staged a rally. Story and Alwardt each hit jumpers and Story made a pair of free throws to get Brockport within six, 48-42 with 2:10 remaining, but the Golden Eagles couldn't complete the comeback.
Story and Alwardt, a member of the d3hoops.com national Team of the Week, each finished with seven points for the Golden Eagles, who return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday with a road game at Oneonta.
