Tilley's Strong Pitching Leads Baseball

Junior limits Dickinson College to one run over seven innings

Brockport scored three runs in the fifth inning during a 6-1 win over Dickinson College Monday morning.
BOXSCORE

Junior Aaron Tilley (Troy, NY/Troy) made his debut for The College at Brockport's baseball team and delivered a pitching gem to lead the Golden Eagles to their seventh win in nine games.

Tilley, who transferred to Brockport from Hudson Valley Community College, limited Dickinson College to one run over seven effective innings as the Golden Eagles (7-2) rolled to a 6-1 win Monday morning at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.

“Aaron just settled in after the first inning, threw a lot of strikes and stayed ahead with his fastball,” said Justin Beach, Brockport's fourth-year head coach.

“Then, later in the game, Aaron threw his off-speed pitches for strikes. We played good defense behind him and we got a couple of double-plays, which helped us get out of jams.”

Senior Tom McCormick (Utica, NY/Utica Notre Dame) drove in two runs with a fifth-inning single as Brockport broke open a 2-1 game and took a 5-1 lead. Sophomore Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), senior Zach Prentice (Auburn, NY/Auburn) and junior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) each had RBI's as Brockport snapped Dickinson's (9-2) seven-game winning streak.

Tilley (1-0), a left-hander, retired the final nine batters he faced after allowing a leadoff single in the fifth inning. He allowed only three singles while striking out four.

Brockport took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, got to third on a passed ball and scored on Prentice's sacrifice fly out to right field.

Dickinson struck back with a run in the second on an RBI single, but the Green and Gold reclaimed a one-run cushion in the home half of the second. Sophomore Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and senior Mike Goldstein (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland) each drew one-out walks. Goldstein got out at second on a Keado fielder's choice, but Coleman advanced to third on the play. With runners at the corners, Brockport executed a double-steal as Coleman crossed the plate safely for a 2-1 lead.

Following two scoreless innings, Brockport's bats put three runs on the board thanks to a two-out rally in the fifth. With Weakley on second after coaxing a walk and stealing second, Prentice also walked to give Brockport runners at first and second with two outs.

Booth, a transfer from Orange County Community College, then singled to right-center field to score Weakley with his first RBI as a Golden Eagle. McCormick followed up with a two-run double down the left field line as Brockport led 5-1.

“Two-out hits are usually the difference in a ball game. The team that gets those two-out hits, they're the ones who normally win the games,” Beach said.

“We did what we needed to do to win today. We pitched well, played good defense and we had some timely hitting, and that was enough to get the job done.”

The Golden Eagles tacked on a run in the eighth as Goldstein drew one of Brockport's 12 walks. Junior Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) pinch-ran for Goldstein and advanced to second on a bunt single from Keado. An error by Dickinson allowed DeGregory to score Brockport's final run.

Freshman Justin McCarthy (Mohegan Lake, NY/Lakeland) and Coleman each threw one inning of hitless, scoreless relief to close out Dickinson.

Brockport returns to action against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
