The College at Brockport's baseball team won the first game of its doubleheader against Spalding (KY) University to continue its hot start to the 2011 season before falling in the second game of the twin-bill at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.

The Golden Eagles (9-3) relied on effective pitching from senior Kyle Smith (Sanborn, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) to win game one, 2-1. Smith pitched a complete-game, four-hitter, allowing only a third-inning run as Brockport pulled out the one-run win. Smith struck out six and got 13 ground-ball outs to run his record to a perfect 3-0.

Brockport fell behind 6-0 and dropped the second game, 7-3.

Smith did not allow a hit over the first two innings and retired the side in order during the first, fourth and fifth innings.

Brockport pushed across a run in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) hit a one-out single to right-center field, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and scored when senior Jake Privitera (Brockport, NY/Brockport) delivered a single through the right side of the infield.

Spalding tied it with a two-out rally in the third, but Brockport reclaimed the lead in the fourth, thanks to some timely extra base hits. Junior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) laced a leadoff double down the left-field line, and after a pop out, junior Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) tripled down the right-field line to plate Booth for a 2-1 lead. DeGregory finished with a single and a triple in the game one win.

Smith had to pitch his way out of a seventh-inning jam. Leading 2-1, Smith induced the first two Spalding batters to ground out and strike out before allowing a two-out double. With the tying run on second, Smith bore down and got Eric Johnson to harmlessly ground out on a comebacker to end the game.

On the season, Smith is now 3-0 with a 0.90 earned-run average and 19 strikeouts over 20 innings.

In game two, Brockport fell behind 2-0 after one inning, and gave up four fourth-inning runs to trail 6-0.

The Golden Eagles mounted a rally in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs. Privitera drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single from senior Casey Job (Troy, NY/Troy). Freshman Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) reached on an error to load the bases, and a single from sophomore Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) drove in both Privitera and Job.

Freshman Michael Moroni (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) added an RBI single that plated Tracy as Brockport clawed within 6-3, but the Green and Gold didn't score again in the inning.

The Golden Eagles' Florida trip concludes with an 8:30 a.m. game against Vassar College Thursday morning.
