BROCKPORT, NY — The Empire 8 Conference formally announced its 2026 Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team on Monday, May 11, recognizing standout performances from the postseason. Following a competitive tournament run, SUNY Brockport saw two student-athletes honored for their contributions: first baseman
Matthew Coon and designated hitter
Michael Norton.
The Golden Eagles' postseason journey began with a narrow 0-3 loss to St. John Fisher in the opening round. Brockport kept their season alive in the following round with a commanding 5-1 elimination game victory over Utica University. The team's tournament run eventually came to a close in a hard-fought 9-10 rematch against St. John Fisher in a game that determined the finalist for the Empire 8 Championship.
Matthew Coon was a consistent offensive threat throughout the three-game stretch, finishing the tournament with four hits and four RBIs. After recording a hit in the opener against St. John Fisher, Coon provided a massive spark in the win over Utica by launching a home run and scoring twice. He saved his most explosive performance for the final rematch against Fisher, going 2-for-4 with two more home runs and three RBIs to lead the Golden Eagle offense.
Michael Norton anchored the designated hitter spot with a powerful tournament showing, totaling six hits and four RBIs across three games. Following a quiet opener, Norton was instrumental in the elimination win over Utica, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base. In the season finale against St. John Fisher, Norton went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two additional RBIs, helping the Golden Eagles nearly complete a late-inning comeback.
Following a strong season where the team finished with a 22-21 overall record and a 17-5 mark in conference play, the Golden Eagles look to build off this success as they prepare for their 2027 campaign.
