BOXSCORE GAME 1 BOXSCORE GAME 2
The College at Brockport Baseball team dropped a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader to Cortland, losing 5-4 in game one and 4-3 in game two with both games decided in the bottom half of the final inning Tuesday at Wallace Field in Cortland.
The Golden Eagles (11-6 Overall/0-3 SUNYAC) led in both games of the doubleheader, but watched both leads evaporate late as Cortland, ranked #23 in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, scored in its final at bat to win each contest.
In game one, seniors Max Zimmerman (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and Mike Goldstein (Singerlands, NY/Guilderland) both collected two hits, and senior Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) knocked in two runs for the Golden Eagles, who are listed in the also receiving votes section of the national poll.
Brockport took a lead in the fifth inning when Goldstein singled to center field. Goldstein later scored off a Keado double to give Brockport a 1-0 lead. That lead would increase as Zimmerman led off the sixth with a single to center field, brought home by a Brandon Wroblewski (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) single.
After Cortland (11-5, 3-0) scored in the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Jake Coleman (Hilton, NY/Hilton) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, scoring later off a fielder's choice by Keado.
Cortland scored two runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to take a 4-3 lead. In the top of the ninth inning, junior Mike DeGregory (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) to tie the game at four entering the bottom of the ninth.
In the ninth for Cortland, the lead-off batter walked and later scored off a game-ending single to right field.
Starting for Brockport in the first game was junior Aaron Tilley (Troy, NY/Troy) who went 6 1/3 innings, gave up six hits, two runs, and two walks, striking out two batters in his third start of the season.
Junior Corey Booth (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) went 2-for-3 for the Golden Eagles in game two. Senior Zach Prentice (Auburn, NY/Auburn), freshman Kyle Tracy (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) and Zimmerman all added an RBI for the Golden Eagle offense.
In his third start of the season, junior Mark Ciccotti (Breesport, NY/Horseheads) pitched five innings, giving up six hits and two runs.
The scoring started early in game two as Keado walked to start the top of the first for Brockport. After advancing to second with a Weakley sacrifice bunt, Keado scored after Prentice doubled down the right field line to give Brockport another 1-0 lead.
Senior Casey Job (Troy, NY/Troy) led off the top of the fifth with a single to the shortstop. Senior Jake Privitera (Brockport, NY/Brockport), pinch running for Job, scored off a Zimmerman single to left to put Brockport up 2-0.
After Cortland tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, Booth led off the sixth with a single. Junior Anthony Siracusa (Auburn, NY/Auburn) advanced Booth to third with a double to left center, but Booth did not score after being called out at home. Tracy's ground out scored Siracusa.
Cortland scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, as the Red Dragons tied the game with a single down the right field line and won on a bases-loaded wild pitch.
The Golden Eagles will head back to the Clark V. Whited Complex for their home-opening three-game weekend series against New Paltz. Brockport will play a double-header against the Hawks at 12 p.m. Saturday, followed by a 12 p.m. game Sunday.
